Indo Sarough rugs are among the most sought-after hand-knotted oriental rugs in our Hamburg showroom. Since 1977 Morgenland Teppiche has carried these exquisite Indian interpretations of the classic Persian Sarouk tradition. The combination of traditional knotting art and Indian precision makes these rugs a popular choice for discerning interiors.
Indo Sarouk rugs stem from the Indian rug-knotting tradition, which takes its cue from the classic Persian Sarouk patterns from the region around Arak. Indian weavers adopted these traditional designs as early as the 20th century and developed an independent style of their own. Production is mainly concentrated in the knotting centres of northern India, where experienced craftsmen execute the complex patterns with great care.
The name "Sarough" or "Sarouk" refers to the original Persian model, while the prefix "Indo" marks the Indian origin. These rugs combine Persian design tradition with the even knot density and clean workmanship that are characteristic of Indian knotted pieces.
Indo Sarough rugs are distinguished by their floral central medallions and detailed borders. Typical features are palmette- and rosette-shaped motifs surrounded by flowing vines and foliage. The colour spectrum ranges from classic reds through deep blue to warm earth tones, with cream and beige shades frequently used as base colours.
Particularly characteristic is the symmetrical arrangement of patterns around a central medallion. The borders often show multi-layered designs with a main border and narrower secondary borders. The colour transitions are finely matched and lend the rugs a harmonious overall effect that shines in both classic and modern living spaces.
Indo Sarough rugs are predominantly knotted from high-quality virgin wool, with silk accents occasionally used for particular details. The warp is usually made of cotton, which lends the rug stability and shape retention. The knot density varies between 200,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, enabling precise rendering of the complex patterns.
For the knotting technique the Persian knot (Senneh knot) is used, known for its durability and clean back. After knotting, the pile is sheared evenly and the surface is polished, creating the characteristic silk-like feel. This careful workmanship makes Indo Sarough rugs long-lasting floor coverings.
Indo Sarough rugs are excellently suited to drawing rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. Their balanced proportions and harmonious colours fit both traditional and contemporary interior styles. Similar to Indo Keshan rugs or Indo Isfahan rugs, they bring oriental elegance into modern living spaces, while Indo Bidjar rugs represent a more robust alternative.
Care consists of regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment these wool rugs can retain their beauty for decades. Direct sunlight should be avoided to preserve colour intensity.
In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt we present a carefully curated selection of Indo Sarough rugs in various sizes and colour variations. Our experts are happy to advise you on choosing the right rug for your home. Further information about this rug type can also be found in our guide Indo Sarough entry in the Teppich-Fibel.
