Sarough rugs are among the most famous Persian weavings and have always stood for first-rate quality and timeless elegance. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you will find a carefully curated selection of these extraordinary rugs from the Persian tradition since 1977. Our hand-knotted Sarough examples combine classic pattern language with robust workmanship.
The town of Sarough lies in the Iranian province of Markazi, about 35 kilometres north of Arak. This region developed into an important centre of rug knotting as early as the 19th century and supplied Western markets from an early stage. Saruk rugs, as they are also known in an alternative spelling, became particularly popular in America.
The knotting tradition of Sarough was strongly shaped by the demand of American importers, who imposed specific colour preferences and pattern adjustments. This led to the development of characteristic designs that today are regarded as typical of Sarough rugs. Many of the most valuable examples date from the period between 1900 and 1940.
Sarough rugs are distinguished by their dense, mostly floral patterns. Typical features include central medallions surrounded by elaborately designed vines and floral motifs. The classic Herati pattern frequently appears in the borders, while the main field is often dominated by palmette- and rosette-like elements.
The colour palette ranges from deep reds through warm shades of blue to cream and beige base tones. Particularly characteristic are the intense reds of the main field, complemented by contrasting details in blue, green and ivory. Ardakan rugs show similar colour combinations but differ in their pattern composition.
Authentic Sarough rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool, with the pile applied to a cotton warp and weft. Knot density typically lies between 160,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, providing their characteristic firmness and durability. The Persian Senneh knot is used.
The wool usually comes from local sheep farming and is traditionally dyed with natural colours. This gives the rugs their vibrant character and ensures natural colour variations. Moud rugs sometimes also use silk, while Saruk examples traditionally favour pure wool quality.
Sarough rugs are excellently suited to living spaces with medium to high traffic. Their robust construction makes them ideal for drawing rooms, dining rooms or representative entrance areas. The warm reds harmonise particularly well with classic and modern interior styles.
Care is limited to regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning. Thanks to their dense knotting, Sarough rugs are very hard-wearing and develop a beautiful patina over the years. With proper treatment these rugs can last for generations.
In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt we present a varied selection of Sarough rugs in various sizes and eras.
