At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered a selected collection of these special rugs since 1977, convincing through their exceptional hard-wearing nature and detail-rich patterns.

Origin and history of Indo Bidjar rugs

Indo Bidjar rugs are produced in the tradition-rich knotting workshops of northern India, where Persian masters passed on their centuries-old techniques to local craftspeople. The name "Bidjar" refers to the eponymous Kurdish city in north-western Iran, regarded as the origin of this special knotting tradition. The technique developed there is distinguished by an extremely firm knotting, which earned the rugs the nickname "iron rugs".

Indian knotters have adopted this traditional Bidjar technique and developed it further with local materials and their own colour interpretations. So in regions such as Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, Indo Bidjar rugs are produced that preserve the classic Persian design elements while developing a character of their own through Indian craft.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Indo Bidjar rugs are known for their geometric Herati patterns, distinguished by small fishbone designs and palmettes. Classic motifs include the Shah Abbas palmette pattern, floral arabesques and the typical Mina Khani design with its repeating floral motifs. The central field is frequently dominated by a central medallion complemented by four smaller corner medallions.

The colour scheme of Indo Bidjar rugs traditionally moves in warm earth tones: deep reds dominate the base field, complemented by navy blue, beige and cream-white. Modern variants extend the palette with muted green and gold tones. Particularly characteristic is the high detail density of the patterns, which can be precisely worked out through fine knotting. Indo Ghom rugs share similar design principles but differ in colour intensity.

Material and knotting technique

Indo Bidjar rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool, with silk threads sometimes incorporated for special accents. The warp usually consists of cotton, lending the rug additional stability. Knot density typically lies between 160,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, placing them among the medium-fine to fine knotted oriental rugs. The symmetrical Turkish knot is used, providing the characteristic firmness.

The special knotting technique makes Indo Bidjar rugs extremely hard-wearing and long-lasting. The dense knotting pattern and compact structure mean these rugs retain their form and beauty even under intensive use. Indo Keshan rugs are produced with similar care but rarely reach the extreme robustness of the Bidjar knotting.

Interior styling and care

Thanks to their neutral colour scheme and classic patterns, Indo Bidjar rugs fit harmoniously into various interior styles. They are particularly suited to living rooms, libraries and representative spaces where their elegance comes to the fore. Their robust properties also make them suitable for heavily frequented areas such as entrance halls or corridors. Indo Mir rugs offer similar versatility in interior design.

Caring for Indo Bidjar rugs is straightforward: regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional turning are sufficient for household use. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Owing to their dense structure, Indo Bidjar rugs are little prone to wear and can outlast generations with good care. Our wool rugs are all supplied with corresponding care instructions.
