Yalameh rugs are among the most characterful nomadic rugs from Persia. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered an exquisite selection of these special knotted works since 1977, delighting with their lively colours and authentic nomadic tradition. Our hand-picked Yalameh rugs represent the unadulterated knotting art of the Persian nomadic tribes.

Origin and history of Yalameh rugs

Yalameh rugs come from the mountainous regions of the Iranian province of Fars, south-west of Isfahan. The nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of this region have been knotting these characteristic rugs for centuries, originally serving their own domestic needs. The name Yalameh refers to a tribal group belonging to the larger confederation of the Qashqai.

The knotting tradition has been passed down from generation to generation, with each family developing its own pattern interpretations. These rugs are produced in small villages and settlements where the traditional knotting techniques are still practised today. The Yalameh knotters are known for their ability to work complex geometric patterns from memory, without relying on written templates.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Yalameh rugs are distinguished by their luminous colours and geometric patterns. Typical features include strong red tones contrasted with blue, green and white. The patterns often show stylised flowers, diamonds and medallions composed in symmetrical arrangements. Particularly characteristic are the small, repeating boteh motifs and the zigzag borders typical of nomadic rugs.

The colour palette is determined by natural dyes obtained from local plants. Madder red for the dominant red tones, indigo for the blue tones and various plant juices for yellow and green nuances shape the appearance. These natural dyes lend the rugs their characteristic vibrancy and depth. Similar colour combinations are also found in Afshar Sirjan rugs and Beluch rugs.

Material and knotting technique

Yalameh rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality sheep wool sourced from the local flocks of the nomadic tribes. The wool is hand-spun and dyed, giving each rug an individual character. Cotton mostly serves as the foundation weave, more rarely wool, providing the necessary stability.

Knot density typically lies between 100,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre. The Persian Senneh knot is used, enabling a particularly firm and lasting structure. The relatively moderate knot density allows the knotters to render the characteristic geometric patterns clearly and precisely. They share this technique with other nomadic tribes whose works such as Kaschkuli rugs show similar features.

Interior styling and care

Yalameh rugs are excellently suited to living spaces where an authentic, lively accent is desired. Their robust properties make them ideal for living rooms, dining rooms or studies. The strong colours harmonise particularly well with natural materials and warm interior styles. Thanks to their medium pile height they are also suitable for areas with normal use.

Caring for Yalameh rugs is straightforward. Regular vacuuming removes dust and dirt, while the natural wool fibres possess a certain self-cleaning capacity. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. With appropriate care these robust nomadic rugs can outlast decades while preserving their beauty. Further information on the care of wool rugs can be found in our guide.
