Origin and history of Afshar Sirjan rugs

Afshar Sirjan rugs come from the southern Persian city of Sirjan in Kerman Province. The Afshar are a nomadic tribe of Turkic origin that settled in various regions of Persia in the 16th century. The group around Sirjan developed an independent weaving tradition that combines both Turkic and Persian influences.

Sirjan is strategically located on ancient trade routes and has long been a centre of rug production. The nomadic roots of the Afshar are still reflected today in the practical and robust qualities of their rugs. Unlike pure nomadic rugs, however, Afshar rugs are often produced in settled workshops, which allows for more consistent quality.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Afshar Sirjan rugs are distinguished by geometric patterns and an earthy colour palette. Diamond-shaped medallions, stylised floral motifs and the characteristic Herati pattern are typical. The borders often feature repetitive geometric elements rooted in the nomadic tradition. Boteh (paisley), rosettes and stylised animal figures appear especially frequently.

The colours focus on warm tones: rust red, deep blue, beige and brown dominate the appearance. These natural shades are traditionally obtained from plant and mineral materials. The patterns are mostly symmetrical, with the central medallion surrounded by smaller geometric elements. This composition gives the rugs their distinctive character and makes them a popular choice for lovers of authentic oriental rugs.

Material and weaving technique

Afshar Sirjan rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality wool sourced from sheep in the Kerman region. This wool is particularly hard-wearing and develops a beautiful patina over time. Cotton is generally used as the base material for warp and weft, giving the rug stability. Knot density typically ranges between 80,000 and 150,000 knots per square metre.

The Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot) is used, characteristic of the Afshar's Turkic roots. This weaving technique produces a particularly robust structure and makes the rugs very long-lasting. The pile is cut to medium length, giving the rugs their typical firm texture. Similar quality features can also be found in Yalameh rugs and Bachtiari rugs from the same region.

Interior styling and care

Afshar Sirjan rugs are excellent for living spaces that should radiate an authentic and warm atmosphere. Their earthy colours harmonise particularly well with wooden furniture and natural materials. Thanks to their robust construction, they are also suitable for high-traffic areas such as entryways or dining rooms. The geometric patterns lend an interesting accent to both modern and traditional interior styles.

Care is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional rotation are usually sufficient. For heavier soiling, we recommend a professional rug cleaning. The high-quality wool is naturally dirt-repellent and forgives minor mishaps. With proper care, Afshar Sirjan rugs retain their beauty for decades and can even gain in value. Equally easy to care for are Kaschkuli rugs, which also come from the Kerman region.
