Kaschkuli rugs are among the most precious nomadic rugs from Persia and delight collectors and lovers of Oriental textile art alike. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have presented a select collection of these rare knotted works since 1977, convincing through their exceptional quality and authentic origin. Kaschkuli rugs unite nomadic tradition with the highest hand-craft perfection.

Origin and history of Kaschkuli rugs

The Kaschkuli are a tribe of the Qashqai confederation, at home in Fars Province in southern Iran. Their settlement area extends mainly around the city of Shiraz and the surrounding mountain regions. As part of the Turkic-origin Qashqai, the Kaschkuli have cultivated the tradition of nomadism and rug knotting for centuries.

The history of Kaschkuli rug knotting goes back to the 18th century. Originally, nomadic women knotted these rugs exclusively for their own use in their tents and as dowries. Only in the 20th century did rug traders discover the exceptional quality of these works and begin to market them internationally. Today Kaschkuli rugs are regarded as particularly sought-after collectors' items.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Kaschkuli rugs are distinguished by their characteristic geometric patterns and harmonious colour composition. Typical features include medallion designs with multi-facetted stars and diamonds, surrounded by stylised blossoms and vines. The borders frequently show dog or wolf teeth, considered protective symbols. The so-called Gabbeh variants of the Kaschkuli with more abstract motifs are particularly valued.

The colour palette of Kaschkuli rugs is exceptionally diverse and vivid. Dominant are warm reds, ranging from deep wine red to luminous crimson. These are complemented by powerful blue tones, warm ivory and accenting green and yellow nuances. The natural dyes used give the rugs their characteristic patina and depth.

Material and knotting technique

Genuine Kaschkuli rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from the nomads' own flocks. The wool is traditionally dyed with natural colours from plants, minerals and insects, giving the rugs their unmistakable appearance. The pile is medium-high and particularly hard-wearing, since it was designed for the harsh daily life of the nomad tent.

The knotting technique uses the asymmetric Senneh knot on a cotton ground. Knot density typically lies between 100,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre. This moderate density enables the characteristic vivacity of the patterns and gives the rugs their typical nomadic appearance. Similar qualities are also found in Afshar Sirjan rugs and Yalameh rugs.

Interior styling and care

Kaschkuli rugs are excellent for living areas that can take an authentic and characterful accent. Their warm colours and vivid patterns harmonise particularly well with natural materials such as wood and leather. Unlike finer Belutsch rugs they also withstand heavier wear and are therefore also suitable for family households.

Care of Kaschkuli rugs is straightforward, since they were designed for the harsh daily life of nomads. Regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning are enough to preserve their beauty for decades. With appropriate care these robust nomadic rugs can outlast several generations, gaining in character and value.
