Bachtiari rugs are among the most fascinating nomadic rugs from Persia and have been at the centre of Morgenland Teppiche's expertise in Hamburg since 1977. These hand-knotted masterpieces from the Zagros Mountains are distinguished by their robust quality and characteristic geometric patterns. In our range you will find both classic and modern interpretations of this tradition-rich knotting art.

Origin and history of Bachtiari rugs

The Bachtiari come from the mountainous regions of the Iranian province of Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiari and adjacent areas of Isfahan and Lorestan. The Bachtiari tribe is one of the largest nomadic peoples of Persia and looks back on a centuries-old tradition of rug knotting. Historically they were known as skilled horsemen and warriors who migrated between summer and winter pastures.

The knotting tradition developed from the practical needs of nomadic life. Originally the rugs served as tent floors, wall hangings and saddlebags. Only in the 19th century did the Bachtiari begin to produce their rugs for trade as well. Proximity to Isfahan substantially influenced both the quality and the variety of patterns.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Bachtiari rugs are known for their geometric designs, with the famous garden pattern among the most characteristic. This divides the rug field into rectangular or diamond-shaped panels, each filled with different motifs — trees, blossoms, animals or abstract symbols. This composition symbolises the Persian garden with its various areas.

The colour palette traditionally includes warm earth tones: deep reds and browns dominate, complemented by dark blue, beige and ivory. Modern Bakhtiari interpretations expand this palette with softer tones. Typical motifs include Herati borders, stylised palmettes and the characteristic boteh pattern. You will find related styles in our Afshar Sirjan rugs and Yalameh rugs collections.

Material and knotting technique

Authentic Bachtiari rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool, with the pile made of wool and the warp usually of cotton. The wool comes from sheep of the Zagros Mountains and is distinguished by particular hard-wearing properties. Its natural lanolin coating makes it resistant to dirt and moisture.

Knot density varies between 150,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, using the Turkish (Ghiordes) knot. This technique lends the rugs their characteristic firmness and longevity. Similar quality features are also shown by Belutsch rugs and Kaschkuli rugs from neighbouring regions. Detailed information on knotting technique can be found in the Bachtiari entry in the Teppich-Fibel.

Interior styling and care

Bachtiari rugs are excellent for living and dining areas, since their robust construction stands up to heavier use. The warm colour tones harmonise particularly well with classic and rustic interior styles, but they also set effective accents in modern rooms. Their medium pile height makes them easy to care for and suitable for everyday use.

Care is limited to regular vacuuming against the pile and occasional airing. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Thanks to their robust wool fibres, Bachtiari rugs can last for several generations with appropriate care and gain in patina and character over time.
