Meymeh rugs are among the authentic Persian village weavings from the eponymous town in Isfahan Province. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have found hand-picked examples of this traditional knotting art since 1977. These distinctive pieces convince with their robust workmanship and the typical geometric patterns of the region.
Meymeh is a small town located about 50 kilometres north-east of Isfahan in the heart of Persia. The town looks back on a centuries-long rug-knotting tradition closely connected to the nomadic tribes of the region. Local weavers have preserved and developed their techniques and pattern traditions over generations.
Rug production in Meymeh today still follows traditional methods. Family-run businesses shape the craft, with knowledge passed from parents to children. This unbroken tradition is reflected in the consistently high quality of Meymeh rugs, which are intended for both the local market and export.
Meymeh rugs are distinguished by their geometric base patterns and earthy colour palette. Reds and blues in various shades dominate, complemented by beige, brown and cream tones. The classic medallion design takes centre stage in many pieces, framed by stylised floral motifs and geometric borders.
Characteristic of these weavings are the clear lines and the symmetrical arrangement of the motifs. Unlike the neighbouring Joshaghan rugs, Meymeh weavers often forgo overly detailed embellishments and rely instead on the effect of the overall composition. The patterns frequently show nomadic influences, expressed in powerful and elemental design.
For Meymeh rugs only high-quality virgin wool is used, sourced from the sheep of the surrounding highland pastures. This wool is distinguished by its firmness and natural sheen. The knot density typically lies between 120,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre, ensuring solid quality with good durability.
Knotting is carried out with the Persian Senneh knot, which enables an even and dense surface. As with Borchalou rugs, great importance is placed on the use of natural dyes. These provide the characteristic colour depth and lightfastness that Meymeh rugs retain for decades.
Meymeh rugs are excellent for living spaces with classic or rustic furnishings. Their warm earth tones harmonise particularly well with wooden furniture and create a cosy atmosphere. The robust workmanship also makes them suitable for more frequently used areas such as dining rooms or entrance halls.
Caring for wool rugs such as Meymeh weavings is straightforward. Regular vacuuming keeps the fibres in good condition. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. The natural materials and solid knotting ensure a service life of several decades with proper treatment.
