Origin and history of Joshaghan rugs

Joshaghan, also known as Joschaghan, is a small town in the Iranian province of Isfahan, about 80 kilometres north-west of the provincial capital. Rug knotting here has a tradition spanning more than 400 years, reaching back to the 17th century. During the Safavid dynasty, rug production in this region first reached its peak.

The town lies in a fertile plain at the foot of the Zagros Mountains, which enabled its inhabitants to combine agriculture with rug knotting. This dual economic structure shaped local culture and led to a particular quality of the rugs, as weavers often worked in family-run businesses and perfected their craft across generations.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Joshaghan rugs are distinguished by their unmistakable geometric patterns, which became world-famous as the "Joshaghan pattern". The characteristic main motif consists of diamond-shaped medallions surrounded by floral elements and geometric forms. These patterns are often distributed in repeating rows across the entire rug field.

The colour palette is traditionally dominated by warm reds, complemented by dark blue, cream and green accents. Particularly typical are the fine borders with several bands that elegantly frame the main field. The Borchalou rugs from the same region show similar characteristics but differ in the execution of their patterns.

Material and knotting technique

Authentic Joshaghan rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from local sheep. The wool is traditionally dyed with natural colours, giving the rugs their characteristic colour depth and longevity. The Persian knot (Senneh knot) is used to achieve the high knot density of 250,000 to 400,000 knots per square metre.

The warp is usually made of cotton, while the weft uses both cotton and wool. This combination provides the necessary stability and flexibility. Similar quality standards are also found in Garawan rugs and Jozan rugs from the Isfahan region.

Interior styling and care

Joshaghan rugs are excellently suited to representative living areas such as drawing rooms, dining rooms or libraries. Their warm colours harmonise particularly well with classic and traditional interior styles, but can also be used in modern spaces as a character-defining accent. The geometric patterns lend any room a special sense of structure and depth.

Care consists of regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional professional rug cleaning. Thanks to the high quality of the materials used and the dense knotting, Joshaghan rugs are exceptionally durable and can retain their beauty across generations with proper treatment. Like all high-grade Persian rugs, they develop a valuable patina over time.
