Origin and history of Jozan rugs

Jozan lies in the Iranian province of Markazi, south of Tehran, and is part of a region known for its rug knotting for centuries. The town and the surrounding villages have a long tradition of producing wool rugs intended both for local use and for export. The Jozan weavers have refined their techniques over generations, developing a distinct style of their own.

Rug production in Jozan today still largely follows traditional methods. Family-run businesses and small workshops shape the picture, with knowledge of patterns and knotting techniques passed from one generation to the next. This continuous tradition ensures the characteristic quality and authenticity of Jozan rugs.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Jozan rugs are distinguished by geometric patterns and a rather restrained colour palette. Typical features include medallions in the centre of the rug surrounded by stylised floral and vine ornaments. The borders frequently show recurring geometric elements, giving the rug a clear, structured frame. Particularly characteristic are the often angular, crystalline shapes of the central medallions.

Warm earth tones such as terracotta, beige and brown dominate the colour scheme, complemented by deep blue and discreet red shades. This natural colour harmony makes Jozan rugs versatile furnishings that integrate well into a range of interior styles. The patterns are usually symmetrically composed and follow the classic Persian design principles without being too dominant or obtrusive.

Material and knotting technique

Jozan rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool, with both warp and weft usually made of cotton. The wool used often comes from local sheep and is treated and dyed using old methods. The Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot) is the predominant knotting technique for Jozan rugs, resulting in a robust and long-lasting structure.

Knot density for Jozan rugs typically lies between 80,000 and 120,000 knots per square metre, ensuring solid quality without being excessively fine. This medium knot density contributes to their characteristic feel and makes the rugs both suitable for everyday use and visually appealing.
