The exquisite workmanship and characteristic pattern language make Kaschmar rugs sought-after collectors' items.

Origin and history of Kaschmar rugs

Kaschmar lies in the north-east of Iran, in Razavi-Khorasan Province, about 200 kilometres south of Maschad. The town has been known for its rug production for centuries and is regarded as an important centre of Persian knotting tradition. The proximity to Maschad rugs considerably influenced the local craftsmanship, which is why Kaschmar rugs are also frequently referred to as Mashad-Kaschmar.

Rug knotting in Kaschmar developed in parallel with other important centres such as Tabriz rugs and Kerman rugs. Already in the 16th century, high-quality knotted works arose here that were exported via the trade routes all over the world. The craftsmen of Kaschmar perfected their technique over generations and developed independent design characteristics.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Kaschmar rugs are distinguished by their exceptionally fine knot density and detailed patterning. Typical are central medallions surrounded by floral ornaments and geometric elements. The borders are usually multi-tiered and show complex vine patterns or stylised palmettes. Kashmar rugs often use the classic Herati pattern as well as Shah Abbas palmettes.

The colour palette traditionally moves in warm tones: deep blue, powerful red, elegant beige and discreet brown tones dominate the appearance. Less commonly, green or gold accents are also found, lending the rugs a particular radiance. The colour combinations are always harmoniously coordinated and reflect the centuries-old experience of the dyers.

Material and knotting technique

Authentic Kaschmar rugs are made exclusively from high-quality virgin wool from sheep of the region. The wool is carefully selected and traditionally dyed with natural colours. High-quality examples may also feature silk threads as accents, particularly in the fine details of the patterns. The warp is usually made of cotton, lending the rug stability and longevity.

Knotting is done with the asymmetric Senneh knot, which enables a particularly dense and even surface. Quality-conscious Kaschmar rugs reach knot densities of 300,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre. This fine knotting work demands months of handcraft from experienced knotters and justifies the high value of these Persian rugs.

Interior styling and care

Kaschmar rugs are excellent for representative living areas such as living rooms, libraries or entrance halls. Their classic elegance harmonises with both traditional and modern furnishings. The robust wool rugs also withstand stronger use and retain their beauty for decades if treated properly.

Care of a Kaschmar rug requires regular, careful vacuuming in the direction of the pile. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Direct sunlight should be avoided in order to prevent fading of the natural colours. With proper care these rugs can outlast generations and even gain in value.
