Maschad rugs are among the most renowned knotted products of Persia and have been a fixed part of the range at Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg since 1977. As one of the most important rug cities of Iran, Maschad stands for the highest hand-craft precision and traditional knotting art. Our carefully selected Maschad rugs embody centuries-old Persian culture and craftsmanship.

Origin and history of Maschad rugs

Maschad, also known as Mashhad or Mashad, is the capital of Razavi-Khorasan Province in the north-east of Iran. The city is considered the most important religious centre of the country and houses the shrine of the eighth Shia Imam Reza. This religious importance also shaped rug production, since many pilgrims acquired hand-knotted rugs as gifts or souvenirs.

The rug tradition in Maschad reaches back to the 16th century and experienced its heyday in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The workshops of the Amoghli family in particular became famous, whose name still stands for the highest quality today. The strategic location on the Silk Road substantially influenced both the available materials and the variety of patterns.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Maschad rugs are distinguished by their characteristic colour palette of dark reds, deep blue and warm beige tones. The central medallion frequently dominates the pattern field, surrounded by floral ornaments and geometric elements. Also typical are large-scale Herati patterns and palmette-decorated borders, which lend the rug a noble frame.

Maschad rugs with the so-called Shah Abbas pattern, which shows stylised palmettes and arabesques, are particularly valued. The knotters often use silk for outlines and details, by which certain pattern elements shimmer in the light. This technique lends the rugs their characteristic vivacity and depth, similar to Isfahan rugs.

Material and knotting technique

High-quality Maschad rugs are traditionally knotted from cork wool, the particularly fine wool of young lambs. Cotton frequently serves as weft material, while for particularly precious examples silk is used. The knot density varies between 160,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, although finer pieces can also reach higher values.

The knotters use exclusively the symmetric Ghiordes knot, prized for its durability and even surface. Similar to Tabriz rugs, dyeing is done with natural dyes such as madder, indigo and saffron. These traditional dyeing methods ensure the characteristic colour depth and durability.

Interior styling and care

Maschad rugs are excellent for representative living areas, dining rooms and salons. Their warm colour tones harmonise particularly well with classic and traditional interior styles, but also fit into modern living concepts. Larger examples create impressive room accents, while smaller formats can be used as wall hangings.

Care is by regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional rotation for even wear. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Through their robust knotting and high-quality materials, Maschad rugs with appropriate care can outlast several generations and even gain in value.
