Kerman rugs are among the most precious and sought-after knotted works from Persia. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have found an exquisite selection of these exceptional rugs since 1977, renowned worldwide for their technical perfection and artistic refinement. Our experts in Hamburg's Speicherstadt are happy to advise you in choosing your Kerman rug.
Kerman rugs come from the eponymous town of Kerman in Kerman Province in south-eastern Iran. The region looks back on a rug-knotting tradition spanning more than 500 years, which reached its heyday under the Safavid Dynasty (16th–18th century). Kerman established itself as one of the most important centres of Persian rug production and decisively shaped the development of the knotting art.
The rugs from Kerman, sometimes also referred to as Kirman rugs, gained international recognition as early as the 17th century. European traders prized the exceptional quality and refined designs. This tradition has been passed from generation to generation over centuries and makes Kerman rugs sought-after collectors' items today.
Kerman rugs are distinguished by their exceptionally detailed and complex patterns. Characteristic are floral medallions in the centre of the field, surrounded by artfully designed vines, palmettes and blossom motifs. The borders often show several narrow bands with geometric or floral elements that elegantly frame the main field.
The colour palette of Kerman rugs is particularly varied and refined. Alongside classic red and blue tones, cream, beige and pink grounds are also often found. These harmonious colour combinations come from the use of natural dyes and give each rug its unmistakable character. Particularly valued are also the rare silk Kerman pieces with their characteristic sheen.
Kerman rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool sourced from sheep on the highlands of the region. This wool is distinguished by its firmness and natural sheen. For especially valuable pieces silk is also used, either entirely or as an accent for the outlines of the patterns. The combination of wool and silk lends the rugs particular depth and brilliance.
The knotting technique of Kerman rugs follows the asymmetric Senneh knot, which enables a particularly fine and even surface. With knot densities between 300,000 and over 1,000,000 knots per square metre they are among the finest Persian rugs at all. This high knot density makes it possible to render the smallest details and makes every Kerman a technical masterpiece.
Kerman rugs are excellent for representative living areas such as living rooms, dining rooms or reception halls. Their elegant colours and timeless patterns harmonise with both classic and modern interior styles. Similar to Ardakan rugs or Moud rugs, they lend every space a special atmosphere and quality.
Care of a Kerman rug is straightforward when handled professionally. Regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile preserves the structure, while a professional rug cleaning every few years preserves the original colour brilliance. With proper care these high-quality rugs can retain their beauty over generations and may even gain in value.
