Ghoutshan rugs from Persian Khorasan have been valued at Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg since 1977 for their exceptional quality and distinctive geometric patterns. These hand-knotted oriental rugs come from the region around the city of Ghoutshan in north-eastern Iran and represent a centuries-old knotting tradition. Our range includes both classic and contemporary variations of these sought-after Persian rugs.

Origin and history of Ghoutshan rugs

Ghoutshan rugs, also spelt Quchan, come from the eponymous city in the Iranian province of Razavi Khorasan. This region in the north-east of Persia lies strategically along the historic Silk Road and was an important centre of rug knotting from an early date. The city of Ghoutshan itself lies around 150 kilometres south of Mashhad and has been known for high-quality rugs for centuries.

The knotting tradition in Ghoutshan developed under the influence of various cultural currents, as the region served as a transit area for traders and nomadic tribes. The Turkmen tribes who settled in the region in particular shaped the characteristic patterns and colour schemes of Ghoutshan rugs. Today these rugs are produced both in the city itself and in the surrounding villages, with traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Ghoutshan rugs are distinguished by their geometric patterns and the use of classic Persian ornaments. Typical are medallion-shaped central motifs surrounded by floral tendrils and geometric borders. The patterns often show influences of the Ardakan rugs and other Persian provincial styles, yet develop a distinctive visual language with characteristic rosettes and palmettes.

The colour palette of Ghoutshan rugs is traditionally dominated by warm red tones, complemented by deep blue, beige and ivory. Modern variations also use more subdued shades in brown and beige. The patterns are usually symmetrically composed, with the central medallion surrounded by smaller ornaments. This stylistic kinship is also evident in Nahavand rugs from the same cultural region.

Material and knotting technique

Ghoutshan rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool, with silk used for particularly fine examples. The warp is usually made of cotton, lending the rug stability. Knot density varies depending on quality between 200,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre. The Persian knot (Senneh knot) is used, valued for its durability and ability to render fine pattern detail.

The wool for Ghoutshan rugs is usually sourced from the region itself and traditionally dyed with natural colours. The knotting work is carried out on vertical looms, with experienced weavers needing several months to complete a medium-sized rug. They share this artisanal quality with other high-grade Persian rugs such as the Moud rugs from the neighbouring province.

Interior styling and care

Ghoutshan rugs are perfectly suited to living rooms, dining rooms and representative spaces. Their classic patterns harmonise with both traditional and modern interior styles. The warm colours create a cosy atmosphere and combine well with wooden furniture and warm wall colours. Like Golpayegan rugs, they are versatile and timelessly elegant.

Caring for Ghoutshan rugs is straightforward: regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile is usually sufficient. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Thanks to high material quality and careful craftsmanship, these rugs are very long-lasting and are often passed down through generations with appropriate care. The natural materials and traditional dyeing methods make them sustainable furnishings.
