Indo Ghom rugs are produced in the renowned knotting centres of India following the traditional models of the holy city of Ghom in Iran. The designation "Indo" refers to the Indian origin, while "Ghom" highlights the stylistic orientation to the famous Persian originals. These rugs are also referred to as Indo Qom rugs, depending on the transliteration of the Persian city name.
The tradition of Indo-Persian knotting developed in the 20th century, when Indian craftspeople adapted the classic Persian designs and refined them with local materials and techniques. Today Indo Ghom rugs stand for a successful synthesis of Persian aesthetics and Indian craftsmanship that delights both collectors and lovers of high-quality oriental rugs.
Indo Ghom rugs are distinguished by their exceptionally fine and detail-rich patterns, often inspired by the classic Ghom designs. Typical features include floral medallion patterns with artfully designed corner ornaments framed by filigree vines and floral motifs. Particularly characteristic are the so-called Shah Abbas palmettes and the traditional boteh patterns distributed across the entire field in various sizes.
The colour palette of Indo Ghom rugs encompasses warm earth tones such as beige, cream and soft brown nuances, often combined with subtle accents in blue, red or green. This harmonious colour scheme makes them ideal companions for both modern and classic interior styles. The borders mostly show several narrow border bands with geometric or floral motifs that elegantly frame the central pattern field.
High-quality Indo Ghom rugs are knotted exclusively from the finest virgin wool or a combination of wool and silk. The wool used mostly comes from the highland regions and is distinguished by its longevity and natural sheen. Silk components lend the rug additional brilliance and emphasise the fine pattern details. Particularly precious examples are made entirely of pure silk and reach knot densities of over 400,000 knots per square metre.
The knotting technique is carried out with the asymmetric Senneh knot, enabling a particularly dense and even structure. Experienced knotters need several months to years for the completion of a single Indo Ghom rug, depending on size and complexity of the pattern. This elaborate handcraft is reflected in the exceptional quality and durability.
Indo Ghom rugs are excellent for representative living areas such as living rooms, dining rooms or studies, where they act as stylish eye-catchers. Their harmonious colour scheme and classic patterns suit both traditional and modern furniture. Related styles such as Indo Bidjar rugs or Indo Isfahan rugs complement one another harmoniously and enable the creation of a coherent overall picture.
Caring for an Indo Ghom rug is straightforward: regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional turning are sufficient for household use. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment a high-quality Indo Ghom rug retains its beauty across decades and may even gain in value.
In our extensive range you will find carefully selected Indo Ghom rugs in various sizes and quality levels. Alongside classic versions we also stock modern interpretations of the traditional patterns that fit perfectly with contemporary interior concepts. As a complement we offer related styles such as Indo Keshan rugs and Indo Mir rugs, which fit harmoniously into the spectrum of high-quality oriental rugs.
