Origin and history of China Silk rugs

The tradition of Chinese silk knotting goes back over 2,000 years and first developed in the imperial workshops of the Han Dynasty. Historically, the centres of production were the regions around Beijing, Tianjin and later also the provinces of Xinjiang and Henan. The production of China Silk rugs was for a long time reserved for the imperial court and the upper class, which led to the development of particularly refined techniques and patterns.

In the 20th century Chinese rug knotting experienced a renaissance, when specialised manufactories began to take up the traditional patterns and techniques once again. This produced both classic reproductions of historical models and modern interpretations of traditional Chinese aesthetics. This development makes China Silk rugs sought-after collector's items today.
