Hosseinabad rugs from the Persian Hamadan region impress with their robust quality and characteristic geometric patterns. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have carried a carefully selected collection of these traditional village weavings since 1977, valued for their exceptional hard-wearing nature.

Origin and history of Hosseinabad rugs

Hosseinabad is a small village in the Iranian province of Hamadan known for its characteristic rugs. The region lies in western Iran and has been an important centre of rug knotting for centuries. The knotters of Hosseinabad have preserved and developed their techniques and pattern traditions over generations.

The rug tradition in Hosseinabad goes back to the 19th century, when the village established itself as an independent knotting region. The local weavers developed an unmistakable style distinguished by particular robustness and practical properties. This tradition is still cultivated by the families in the village today, with knotting techniques passed from one generation to the next.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Hosseinabad rugs are known for their geometric main patterns, often dominated by a central medallion. Stylised plant motifs and traditional Herati patterns are also typical. The borders are mostly designed in several rows and show classic Persian ornaments. A characteristic feature is the often asymmetric arrangement of smaller pattern elements, which gives the rugs a lively appearance.

The colour palette of Hosseinabad rugs is traditionally earth-bound and includes warm reds, deep blue shades and natural beige tones. Green and gold accents are also frequently used. These colours are often achieved through natural plant-based dyes, giving the rugs their characteristic patina. As with Borchalou rugs, traditional dyeing methods take centre stage here too.

Material and knotting technique

Hosseinabad rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from local sheep. This wool is particularly hard-wearing and long-lasting. The warp consists mostly of cotton, lending the rug stability. The knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 150,000 knots per square metre, ensuring solid quality.

Knotting is done with the asymmetric Senneh knot, characteristic of Persian rugs. The knotters mostly work at simple looms and follow traditional patterns, often worked from memory. Like Garawan rugs, Hosseinabad rugs are also distinguished by their hand-crafted authenticity. More details on these techniques can be found in our Hosseinabad entry in the Teppich-Fibel.

Interior styling and care

Thanks to their robustness, Hosseinabad rugs are particularly suited to heavily used areas such as living rooms, hallways or dining rooms. Their earthy tones harmonise with both classic and modern interior styles. The geometric patterns lend rooms structure and warmth without appearing too dominant. They combine particularly well with other traditional Persian weavings such as Joshaghan rugs or Jozan rugs.

Caring for Hosseinabad rugs is straightforward. Regular vacuuming and occasional rotation are usually sufficient. For heavier soiling a professional rug cleaning is recommended. Thanks to the robust wool quality and the firm knotting these rugs can last for decades with good care. The natural materials are breathable and create a pleasant indoor climate.
