Gholtogh lies in the province of Isfahan in the heart of Iran and belongs to the smaller but renowned knotting centres of the region. Rug production in this village looks back on several centuries and was substantially shaped by its proximity to Isfahan. The local knotters developed their own style over generations, combining elements of the classic Isfahan tradition with regional distinctions.
The knotting craft is traditionally passed on within families in Gholtogh. Many of the knotters active today come from families who have been active in rug production since the 18th century. This long tradition is reflected in the consistently high quality and the preservation of classic pattern traditions.
Gholtogh rugs are distinguished by their characteristic mix of geometric and floral elements. A central medallion frequently dominates the field, surrounded by finely executed palmettes and arabesques. The patterns show clear influences from the Isfahan school, but often have a somewhat coarser, more rustic execution that underlines the village character.
The colour palette traditionally moves in warm earth tones. Russet and deep red base tones are combined with navy blue, ivory and discreet accents in green or gold. Modern Borchalou rugs and Garawan rugs from neighbouring regions show similar colour harmonies. The borders are usually structured in three bands, with a wider main border and two narrower side borders.
Gholtogh rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from local sheep breeds. The warp consists mostly of cotton, lending the rug stability. The Persian Senneh knot is used, with knot density typically between 160,000 and 250,000 knots per square metre. This medium to fine knot density enables detailed pattern work as well as a robust structure.
The wool is traditionally dyed with natural colours, although modern Gholtogh rugs also use high-grade chrome-fast dyes. After knotting, the pile is shorn and given its characteristic silky sheen by special washing processes. Similar quality standards are also found in Joshaghan rugs and Jozan rugs from the region.
Gholtogh rugs are excellent for living spaces where a warm, traditional atmosphere is desired. Their warm colour scheme harmonises particularly well with classic and rustic interior styles. The medium knot density makes them suitable for both representative areas and rooms in daily use. In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt you can experience various examples in different room contexts.
Caring for a Gholtogh rug is straightforward. Regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile preserves the beauty of the surface. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. With proper care these robust wool rugs retain their beauty for decades and may even gain in value.
