Burgundy is a deep, slightly bluish red reminiscent of dark wine. Here you will find mainly hand-knotted Oriental rugs such as Persian and Ziegler rugs, plus a few modern Gabbeh rugs.

Burgundy looks more refined and cooler than a classic Oriental red. The blue component gives the colour depth and makes it appear almost velvety in subdued light. A burgundy rug therefore suits rooms that should feel cosy and elegant at the same time, such as a living room with dark wooden furniture or a dining room with muted wall colours.
With sofas in grey, beige or cognac, burgundy creates a warm, rich frame. If you want to cover a lot of floor, you will find sizes up to 300 x 400 cm, which can calmly structure even large living spaces. Dark curtains or a walnut bookcase reinforce the cosy effect, while light walls keep the room open. Our living room rugs show further combinations.
Under a large dining table, a wine red rug holds the table group together and dampens sound. The dark colour is practical here, because small stains are less noticeable. You will find suitable designs under Dining Room Rugs.
Almost all our burgundy and wine red rugs are hand-knotted Oriental rugs. A good two thirds are Persian rugs, and just under a third come from Afghanistan. Most are made of virgin wool, some of kork wool. You will also find a few modern rugs, such as Persian Gabbeh and Loribaft rugs with abstract patterns or stripes.
Ziegler rugs, which today are knotted mainly in Afghanistan, make up the largest single share. Their pattern of generous tendrils on a wine red ground looks calm and elegant and also suits modern rooms. You will find more designs from this region under Afghan rugs.
The Persian rugs include densely knotted Bidjar rugs, Ardabil rugs from the north-west with geometric patterns, and Nahavand and Bakhtiari rugs with bold medallions and panel patterns. Around two in five rugs feature a medallion, and just under a third an all-over field.
Nine out of ten burgundy rugs are rectangular. The range extends from small mats of around 40 x 60 cm to large sizes of 300 x 400 cm; 200 x 300 cm is particularly common. There are only a few runners in this shade. For entrance halls and narrow rooms, it is therefore also worth looking at smaller rectangular sizes such as 80 x 120 cm or 60 x 90 cm.
The terms are often used interchangeably. Wine red sometimes looks a little lighter and redder, burgundy a little darker and cooler. That is why you will find both shades together on this page.
Yes. With clean lines in white, grey or black in particular, a wine red rug looks refined and warm at the same time. A Ziegler with a calm tendril pattern blends in more easily than a Persian rug with a large medallion, which takes centre stage more.
Yes, as long as the shades do not touch directly. Across a hallway or an open door, related shades of red look like a deliberately chosen colour family. The dark red rugs show more deep shades of red.
You will find all shades of red together under Red Rugs.
