Dark red is the red of classic Oriental rugs: warm, rich and deep. Most of our dark red rugs are hand-knotted Persian rugs, alongside modern Loribaft and Gabbeh rugs.

Hardly any colour is as closely linked to the Oriental rug as a deep red. Traditionally it was obtained from madder root, and to this day it shapes many Persian and Afghan patterns. A dark red rug visibly warms a room without looking garish, and together with wood, leather and brass it creates a calm, homely atmosphere.
Under a seating group in leather or light fabric, dark red shows its full effect. Sizes such as 200 x 300 cm or 170 x 240 cm offer enough space for a sofa and coffee table, and a central medallion gives the room a centre. You will find further inspiration among the living room rugs.
Dark red runners are among the classics for an entrance area: the rich colour welcomes guests warmly, and the dense pattern forgives dirt from the street. Around one in seven of our dark red rugs is a runner, in lengths of up to two metres and beyond. You will find more designs under Hallway Rugs. In a study, dark red suits bookshelves and dark wood.
Almost all our dark red rugs are Oriental rugs. Just under three quarters are Persian rugs, and a good fifth come from Afghanistan. Most are hand-knotted, and a good one in ten is hand-woven, mainly Afghan kilims. There are also modern rugs in dark red, mainly Loribaft and Gabbeh rugs from Persia and India, which show the colour as a calm, often plain surface or with a minimalist pattern.
Bidjar rugs, which are considered particularly dense and hard-wearing, are the most strongly represented. Shiraz rugs from southern Persia bring nomadic patterns with geometric medallions, and Tabriz rugs finer, urban designs. More than half of all dark red designs feature a medallion, and a quarter an all-over field.
Baluch rugs from the border region between Iran and Afghanistan combine dark red with blue and brown, which gives them a particularly subdued look. Flat-woven kilims are lighter and thinner than knotted rugs and suit rooms where the rug is moved more often. The dark red pieces also include some older rugs that are 25 to 35 years old.
A good three quarters of the dark red rugs are rectangular. The most common sizes are 200 x 300 cm, 150 x 200 cm, 170 x 240 cm and 100 x 150 cm. In addition, there are many runners as well as some round and square rugs, for example for reading corners or small dining tables.
That depends on the surroundings. With white walls, simple furniture and plenty of light, a red Persian rug looks fresh and confident. If you prefer a more modern look, choose a design with a calmer, all-over field or a kilim with a geometric pattern.
Dark red is a warm, slightly brownish red, as seen in many Persian rugs. Burgundy has more blue in it and looks cooler and more refined. You will find a dedicated selection among the burgundy rugs.
We show all shades of red under Red Rugs; you will find lighter, brighter variants among the light red rugs.
