Bidjar - Zanjan rugs combine the robust knotting tradition of the Kurdish town of Bidjar with the fine craftsmanship of the Zanjan region in north-western Iran. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have carried a carefully selected collection of these exceptionally hard-wearing rugs since 1977. The combination of both traditions creates one-of-a-kind pieces of special durability and aesthetic value.

Origin and history of Bidjar - Zanjan rugs

The town of Bidjar lies in the Iranian province of Kurdistan and has been considered a centre for particularly firm and long-lived rug knotting for centuries. The Zanjan region, located about 200 kilometres south-east, brings its own design traditions into this cooperation. Both areas look back on more than 400 years of rug history, shaped by nomadic and settled knotters alike.

The connection between Bidjar and Zanjan emerged through trade routes and the migration of knotting families, who passed on their techniques and patterns over generations. This cultural blending led to an independent stylistic direction that combines both Kurdish robustness and the refined designs of the Zanjan region.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Bidjar Zanjan rugs are distinguished by geometric base patterns frequently combined with floral elements. Typical features include large medallions in the centre of the field, surrounded by stylised blossoms and vines. The borders usually show multiple frames with alternating rosette, palmette and meander motifs.

The colour palette traditionally moves between warm reds and blues as base colours, complemented by ivory, gold and dark green. Modern interpretations expand the spectrum with muted earth tones and cream-coloured variations. Characteristic is the clear outlining of all pattern elements, giving the rug its distinctive presence.

A special feature are the so-called "Bidjar crossings" — small geometric connecting elements between the main patterns that give the design additional structure. These details distinguish authentic Bidjar - Zanjan rugs from similar weavings of other regions.

Material and knotting technique

The basis is invariably high-quality virgin wool, sourced locally and dyed with natural and chrome-fast dyes. The warp consists mostly of strong cotton yarn, while the weft is worked alternately from cotton and wool. This combination of materials provides the legendary stability of Bidjar weavings.

With a knot density between 160,000 and 300,000 knots per square metre, Borchalou rugs and other regional neighbours belong to the same quality category. The symmetric Turkish knot is pulled particularly tight and strongly pressed down after each row. This intensive compaction makes the rugs extremely resistant to wear.

Interior styling and care

Bidjar - Zanjan rugs are excellent for heavily used areas such as entrance halls, living rooms and dining rooms. Their robustness makes them the ideal choice for families with children or in commercial spaces. The classic designs harmonise with both traditional and modern furnishings.

The dense knotting makes care considerably easier — dirt barely penetrates into the depth and can be removed by regular vacuuming. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment these rugs easily reach an age of 50 to 100 years.
