Yazd rugs from Iran have delighted lovers of oriental textiles for centuries with their precise knotting technique and elegant patterns. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have presented a choice selection of these prized Persian rugs in the best quality since 1977. Our hand-picked Yazd rugs come from the eponymous desert city and convince through their characteristic workmanship.
The city of Yazd lies at the centre of the Iranian highland plateau and looks back on a history spanning more than 3,000 years. As an important junction of the Silk Road, an important textile tradition developed here as early as the Middle Ages. The knotters of the region perfected their techniques across generations and created an unmistakable rug style distinguished by particular fineness.
The tradition of rug knotting in Yazd was significantly shaped by the geographic location. Proximity to trade routes enabled access to high-grade materials and exchange with other knotting centres. The connection to Isfahan and other important Persian manufactories in particular had a lasting influence on the development of the typical Yazd patterns.
Yazd rugs are distinguished by their fine, often floral patterns inspired by classic Persian models. Characteristic are medallion-like central motifs framed by symmetrical border patterns. The colour palette traditionally moves in warm red tones, complemented by deep blue and beige nuances. The precisely executed palmette and vine-like ornaments are particularly appreciated.
Another feature of Yazd rugs is their fine knot density, which enables detail-rich patterns. The designs are often oriented to historical models from Isfahan or other classic Persian centres but are executed in the characteristic Yazd interpretation. This results in compositions that unite both traditional elements and regional peculiarities.
Yazd rugs are traditionally made from high-quality virgin wool, with the warp frequently consisting of cotton. This material combination ensures stability and longevity. The wool usually comes from regional sources and is carefully processed to achieve the characteristic soft feel. In special examples silk accents are also found in the patterns.
The knotting technique follows the Persian Senneh knot, which enables a particularly dense and even surface. With knot densities between 250,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, Yazd rugs achieve considerable fineness. This precise workmanship makes every rug a long-lasting quality product that, with appropriate care, can outlast generations.
Yazd rugs are excellently suited to representative living areas such as living rooms, libraries or dining rooms. Their elegant patterns and warm colours create an atmospheric spatial effect that fits both classic and modern interior styles. Like Ardakan rugs or Moud rugs, they embody the quality of central-Persian knotting craft.
Care requires regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment Yazd rugs develop a beautiful patina over the years and retain their structural integrity. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent the natural colours from fading.
In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt we present a carefully curated selection of Yazd rugs in various sizes and quality levels. Alongside classic examples you will also find pieces stylistically related to Ghoutshan rugs or Golpayegan rugs. Further information on the origin and special features of this knotting style can be found in our guide: Yazd entry in the Teppich-Fibel.
