Tabatabai rugs are distinguished by their exceptionally fine and detailed patterns, often inspired by classic Persian designs but extended through modern interpretations. Characteristic are the precise medallion patterns with artful corner ornaments, floral vines and geometric elements that stand in perfect harmony with one another. The pattern execution shows impressive attention to detail, only achievable through high knot density and the skill of experienced master knotters.

The colour palette of Tabatabai rugs moves between classic earth tones and modern, restrained nuances. For Tabatabai rugs only hand-spun virgin wool of the highest grade is used, often combined with silk threads. The wool comes from the Iranian highlands and is distinguished by its longevity and natural sheen. For silk rugs or silk-containing pieces only pure mulberry silk is used, lending the rugs their characteristic brilliance. Knot density usually lies between 400,000 and over 1,000,000 knots per square metre, contributing to the exceptional pattern precision.

The knotting technique follows the traditional Persian method with the asymmetric Senneh knot, enabling a particularly firm and durable bond. Every knot is tied individually by hand and carefully aligned, creating the characteristic uniformity of the surface.
