Short pile vs. high pile: which suits you better?

The choice between short pile and high pile depends on where the rug will be used and on your personal priorities:

Criterion

Short pile

High pile

Pile height

Up to 15 mm

From 15 mm (shaggy from 40 mm)

Care effort

Low: simply vacuum

Medium: low setting, no brush

Suitability for allergy sufferers

Very good: traps little dust

Limited: binds more particles

Cosiness

Pleasant, rather understated

Very soft, cosy

Impact sound insulation

Moderate

High

Underfloor heating

Ideal: thin, good heat conduction

Possible, but limited

Suitable for

Hallway, kitchen, dining room, office

Bedroom, living room, reading corner

Tip: in open-plan living areas, both types combine well. A short-pile rug in the dining area and a high-pile rug in front of the sofa create different zones, each with the right level of comfort.

Short-pile rugs and their characteristics

The most important feature of short-pile rugs is their smooth surface, which sets them apart from high-pile rugs. This property allows patterns to be shown particularly clearly and also makes them easy to care for. If you like graphic patterns, they look especially good on a grey or beige short-pile rug.

Whether stripes, checks, floral patterns or geometric motifs – short-pile rugs are available in a wide variety of patterns and colours, which does not make the choice easy. Short-pile rugs are also referred to as flatweave rugs, as their pile is no more than 1.5 centimetres high.

The advantages of short-pile rugs

High-quality, modern short-pile rugs offer numerous practical advantages. With a pile height of no more than 1.5 centimetres, they are more compact than high-pile rugs and show designs and patterns to better effect. Thanks to the low pile height, less dust, mites and dirt settle in the fibres.

Short-pile rugs are easy to clean and stand out for their hard-wearing quality and durability. They are a good choice for pet owners and allergy sufferers and offer soft comfort underfoot as well as good sound insulation. Here are the main advantages of short-pile rugs at a glance:

  • Short fibres that are easy to clean
  • Robust and durable
  • Suitable for allergy sufferers and pet owners
  • Elegant patterns and designs
  • Soft comfort underfoot
  • Good sound insulation

Short-pile rugs in many shapes and colours

Modern short-pile rugs are available in various shapes and colours. In our shop you can choose between square, round and rectangular models.

Short-pile rugs – for every style and living area

In our shop, short-pile rugs are available as Persian and oriental rugs. You can also opt for classic models with a vintage look. Alongside plain designs, there are rugs with unusual colour combinations and elaborate patterns. The fibres of the rug surface are pleasantly soft and do not snag easily. In our shop you will also find bridge rugs and runners in a short-pile design, which also prove their worth in the hallway, the conservatory or the bathroom.

Short-pile rugs – the easy-care choice

Short-pile rugs not only create an inviting and cosy atmosphere. They are also robust and easy to care for. In most cases, regular vacuuming is enough to keep them clean. The excellent quality of materials and workmanship ensures that little dirt and dust clings to the fibres. Discover the wide selection of modern and high-quality short-pile rugs here in the shop and benefit straight away from attractive prices and fast delivery.

A variety of materials: these rug materials enhance your living space

The oriental short-pile rug is the sisal rug. It is made from natural fibres and is very robust. If you have pets or small children, this type of short-pile rug is a good fit. Sisal is also known for its moisture-absorbing properties. The advantage: your indoor climate is improved if you choose a sisal rug. Pure new wool is another popular material for a short-pile rug. Pure new wool is known for its warming properties and is nevertheless very easy to care for. When buying your short-pile rug, make sure that it is certified to Öko-Tex Standard 100 and suitable for underfloor heating.

Cleaning a short-pile rug properly

Short-pile rugs have no pile. Nevertheless, they are warming and can have a rough or a smooth surface texture. Liquids are absorbed only with difficulty by this type of rug. You can therefore easily brush out most of the dirt on your short-pile rug. A major advantage of short-pile rugs: if you have a robot vacuum cleaner helping around the house, it will clean your short-pile rug on its own. With long-pile rugs, on the other hand, such a robot vacuum quickly reaches its limits.

If your rug is very dirty, you can shampoo it. Many rugs can also be put in the washing machine without any problem. Rug cleaning is best done in the summer months. Non-slip short-pile rugs should not be machine-washed because of their backing. The same applies to rugs made of sisal, coir, raffia or other natural fibres. If you would rather avoid chemical rug cleaners, the following household remedies are recommended for rug cleaning:

  • Baking powder
  • Glass cleaner
  • Shaving foam
  • Salt
  • Citric acid

Whichever cleaning agent you choose: test it on a small area first. Not all cleaners are suitable for all types of short-pile rug. The higher the quality and the more expensive the floor covering, the more sensitive it is to chemical cleaning agents. Short-pile rugs can also be impregnated well. Impregnation makes them less susceptible to dirt.

Which short-pile rug suits which interior style?

Is your home furnished in a rather minimalist style? Then your short-pile rug can be a little more colourful. Oriental-inspired motifs in warm colours such as red or yellow instantly convey a cosy feel. If, on the other hand, your interior is already very colourful, it is better to choose a plain model in more neutral tones, such as the popular short-pile rug in grey or beige or the white short-pile rug. Do you love the fashionable shabby chic look? Then a short-pile rug in vintage style is an absolute eye-catcher for your living room. Classic printed patterns and floral motifs are also perfect for putting the finishing touch to your interior.

The Scandinavian interior style, by contrast, is characterised by minimalism. A short-pile rug with an overly striking pattern would look out of place here. Opt instead for a plain model that stays discreetly in the background. The oriental interior style, on the other hand, can be much more opulent and eye-catching. Warm earth tones such as orange, red and brown characterise this style. Short-pile rugs help you create a cosy living atmosphere.

Of course, short-pile rugs are available in numerous different sizes and shapes. You can also buy this type of rug as bridge rugs or bed surrounds. Bridge rugs are all rugs that are no longer than one metre. They can be used to bridge short distances within the home, for example as a runner in the hallway. They are also ideal for commercial premises such as offices.

Conclusion: individual interior design with short-pile rugs

Short-pile rugs are ideal for giving your living space an individual style. On laminate or parquet, they create a cosy feel. Whether you choose a round or an angular shape: thanks to its easy care, a short-pile rug will give you pleasure for years.

  • Sisal rugs ensure an optimal indoor climate and are easy to care for
  • A plain short-pile rug goes perfectly with a classic interior style
  • An oriental-style rug in warm earth tones goes wonderfully with the fashionable ethnic style

FAQ about short-pile rugs:

What is a short-pile rug compared to a high-pile rug?

Choosing between a short-pile rug and a high-pile rug is like choosing between understated modernity and cosy comfort. A short-pile rug is characterised by tightly bound fibres that have a sleek, modern look. It is perfect if you are aiming for a chic, streamlined appearance. High-pile rugs, on the other hand, have longer fibres and looser loops reminiscent of the classic shag style. They exude softness and warmth and are therefore ideal for making your room cosy.

Which pile height is best?

If you are wondering which pile height is most suitable, a rule of thumb is that a maximum pile height of 1.2 cm (1/2") or even 1.9 cm (3/4") is sufficient for most rooms. Low-pile rugs are particularly suitable for rooms with many doors or for rooms in which people with reduced mobility need a little more stability. They make it easier to open and close doors and provide more safety for everyone moving around the room. A low pile is also perfect if you are looking for a rug that stands out with unique patterns or bold colours. It is all about finding the happy medium between style and practicality!

What are the advantages of low-pile rugs?

Low-pile rugs are a good choice for anyone looking for a robust and durable rug. They are easy to care for and ideal for allergy sufferers, as they pick up less dust, dirt and hair. They are also child-friendly, as they are softer than other types of rug and pose a lower risk of injury. In addition, they are available in a wide range of colours and patterns, so you can find an option that suits your personal taste and preferences.
