Purist, close to nature and cosy – the Scandinavian interior style has been on trend for a long time. It takes its cue from the beauty of nature and the wood offered by Scandinavia's endless coniferous forests. Wood feels homely and warm, and the same applies to rugs in Scandinavian style. Anyone who lives in countries where it stays dark for several months will design their interior accordingly: bright, clear and friendly.
In harmony with nature, the Scandinavian living style is characterised by light colours, natural materials, clear shapes, simple elegance and a harmonious colour scheme.
The motto “less is more” is reflected in the avoidance of excessive ornamentation; instead, selected pieces are skilfully showcased. A major advantage is that furniture and rugs made from natural materials have a positive effect on the indoor climate. Whether hand-woven wool rugs or naturally shaped sheepskins, Scandinavian rugs are timelessly beautiful and create a stylish, cosy ambience.
Pastel and natural tones are characteristic of Scandinavian rugs. They are often monochrome and, with their light powder or grey tones, look very understated. By contrast, they set colour accents in white, green or dark earth tones.
Whatever colour you prefer, a rug like this always takes its colour scheme from nature. When patterned, they feature clear, geometric shapes such as rectangles, diamonds and triangles.
Various check patterns, stripes or the traditional herringbone pattern are also popular. Wavy patterns are modelled on the movement of water, while zigzag patterns and ornaments recall the bark and foliage of trees.
Norwegian patterns are all about tradition, and bright splashes of colour in orange, blue and red are not uncommon. The shapes of these rugs range from fluffy sheepskins to square rugs with and without fringes. They are available in round and oval shapes, as high-pile and long-pile rugs and in various sizes. High-quality, warm natural fibres such as wool and cotton are often used, but synthetic fibres are now also available.
To preserve the beauty of Scandinavian rugs for a long time, simple care measures are enough. Beating or shaking out removes deeper-seated dirt from rugs. Regular vacuuming prevents dust particles, pet hair and other dirt from getting deeper into the fibres. When vacuuming, you should avoid using a brush attachment so as not to strain the fibres too much. Light stains on the surface can be removed by dabbing with a kitchen towel from the edge towards the centre.
Rubbing would only work the dirt deeper into the weave. When treating larger stains on natural materials, it is always advisable to test compatibility on an inconspicuous spot first in order to avoid discolouration and fading.
If the soiling is too heavy, professional cleaning is recommended. Here, dirt on the surface and dirt that has penetrated deep into the weave are removed by expert washing, and the rug shines in its former splendour again.
Thanks to their minimalist elegance, Scandinavian rugs come into their own in every living area. In the living room they are an eye-catcher thanks to their clarity and style.
Combined with beautiful furniture made of wood, wicker or rattan, they quickly turn the living room into a favourite place to linger.
In rooms with lots of white or cool-looking leather furniture, they provide warmth and comfort. In the bedroom they create a beautiful frame around the bed or form an attractive finish at the foot of the bed. Outdoor rugs under lounge and garden furniture also look very stylish in sheltered outdoor areas or on the balcony.
What is more, they can be combined with many interior styles; the transition to the natural country-house style and to nostalgic shabby chic is almost seamless.
They are timelessly beautiful and give both city flats and country houses a cosy atmosphere. With various materials, natural colours and subtle patterns, you can bring a piece of Scandinavia into your home.
We offer a diverse selection of shapes and sizes of these rugs, available in various price categories. Our team of experts will be happy to help you find your individual favourite piece.
