Shiraz rugs are among the most characterful Persian weavings and have inspired enthusiasts for centuries with their vibrant colours and bold nomadic patterns. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have stocked a carefully curated selection of this traditional knotting craft from southern Iran since 1977. Our hand-knotted Shiraz rugs combine authentic craftsmanship with the robust quality that has made this region famous.
The city of Shiraz lies in the south-western Iranian province of Fars and is considered the cultural centre of the region. Shiraz rugs, however, are knotted not only in the city itself but mainly by the nomadic tribes of the surrounding area, in particular the Qashqai, Afshar and other tribal groups. These nomadic peoples have preserved and developed their knotting traditions over many generations.
The history of Shiraz rug knotting reaches back to the 16th century, when the nomadic tribes settled in Fars Province. Its proximity to important trade routes made Shiraz a significant centre for the rug trade. The climatic conditions of the region with its hot summers and mild winters favoured both sheep farming and wool processing.
Shiraz rugs are distinguished by their powerful colour palette of dark reds, deep blue and warm earth tones. Characteristic are the geometric patterns with rhombuses, octagons and stylised animal figures. Particularly common are the so-called Herati pattern and various medallion designs, often framed by a wide border.
A typical feature of many Shiraz rugs is the use of goat hair knotted in as dark accents that emphasise the pattern and give the rug additional structure. The nomadic tradition is also visible in the often asymmetric patterns and the lively colour transitions produced by the use of natural plant dyes. Stylised cypresses and other plant motifs are also frequently found, similar to related Ardakan rugs and Ghoutshan rugs.
Most Shiraz rugs are knotted from high-grade sheep's wool sourced from the flocks of the local nomadic tribes. This wool is particularly hard-wearing and develops a beautiful patina through use. A cotton fabric is usually used as the base, more rarely wool warps. Knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre.
Knotting is carried out with the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot), producing the characteristic firm and durable structure. Dyeing is traditionally done with natural colours from plants of the region, creating the typical warm and harmonious colour tones. This technique is shared with other Persian knotting centres such as Golpayegan rugs and Moud rugs.
Shiraz rugs are excellently suited to living areas with medium to high traffic. Their robust structure makes them ideal for drawing rooms, dining rooms or hallways. The warm tones harmonise particularly well with natural materials such as wood and leather, and with traditional as well as modern interior styles. In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt you can experience various sizes and patterns in your own interior context.
Caring for a Shiraz rug is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional rotation are usually sufficient. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. High-quality Shiraz rugs can, with good care, last for several generations and often even gain in beauty and value. Further information on care and characteristics can be found in our comprehensive guide Shiraz entry in the Teppich-Fibel.
Our range includes both classic and rare Shiraz rugs in various sizes and designs. Every rug is carefully selected by us and checked for authenticity and quality. In our Hamburg showroom you can examine the rugs at your leisure and receive advice from our experts, who have decades of experience with Persian weavings.
