Rafsanjan rugs are among the prized Persian knotted works from the Iranian province of Kerman. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered a curated collection of these traditional Oriental rugs since 1977. Our hand-knotted Rafsanjan rugs convince with their solid workmanship and authentic Persian pattern language.

Origin and history of Rafsanjan rugs

Rafsanjan is a town in the province of Kerman in south-eastern Iran, known above all for its pistachio cultivation. Rug knotting in this region has a centuries-old tradition closely linked to the wider knotting art of Kerman Province. The workshops of Rafsanjan developed their own regional style over the decades, distinguished by solid craftsmanship.

The Rafsanjan weavers work to handed-down patterns and techniques passed from one generation to the next. This continuity is reflected in the consistent quality and the characteristic design elements that set Rafsanjan rugs apart from other Kerman productions.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Rafsanjan rugs are distinguished by classic Persian medallion patterns, often supplemented by floral vines and geometric corner elements. The colour palette traditionally moves in warm red tones, complemented by dark blue, beige and cream accents. Symmetrical border compositions with several narrow bands around the main field are also typical.

The design language draws on classic Persian models, with the Rafsanjan weavers placing particular emphasis on balanced proportions. Alongside the traditional medallion patterns, all-over designs with floral motifs can also be found. The designs are usually rich in detail without appearing overloaded.

Material and knotting technique

Rafsanjan rugs are predominantly knotted from high-quality virgin wool, mounted on a cotton warp. Knot density typically lies between 150,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, ensuring solid to fine quality. The Persian Senneh knot is used, creating an even and durable surface.

The wool is dyed before knotting with natural and synthetic colours, with modern dyeing techniques providing lightfastness and colour stability. After knotting, the pile is sheared and surface-treated to achieve the characteristic feel. This finish makes Rafsanjan rugs long-lasting floor coverings for everyday use.

Interior styling and care

Thanks to their robust properties, Rafsanjan rugs are particularly suited to living spaces with normal to medium use. Their warm tones harmonise well with classic and modern interior styles. Like Ardakan rugs or Moud rugs, they suit living and dining rooms, as well as more representative areas.

Care is limited to regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment Rafsanjan rugs retain their original beauty for years. Direct sunlight should be avoided to preserve the colours. The wool surface is naturally dirt-repellent and hard-wearing.
