Meschkin rugs are among the most characteristic knotted works from north-western Iran and delight lovers of high-quality Oriental rugs with their powerful designs and robust workmanship. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have found an exclusive selection of these special Persian rugs since 1977, which convince through their geometric patterns and earthy colour scheme. Our hand-picked Meschkin rugs come directly from the eponymous region and embody centuries-old knotting tradition at the highest quality.
The town of Meschkin lies in the Iranian province of Ardabil, not far from the Azerbaijani border in the north-west of the country. This mountainous region has been known for its rug knotting for centuries, with the Meshkin rugs having developed their own unmistakable stylistic direction. The nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of the region have passed on their traditional patterns and techniques over generations and always kept the practical aspect of their rugs in view.
Historically Meschkin rugs arose as robust everyday rugs for the harsh climatic conditions of the region. The knotters thereby developed particularly hard-wearing techniques and used strong colours that preserve their luminosity even with intensive use. This practical orientation makes Meshgin rugs to this day prized collector's items, perfectly uniting functionality and artistic ambition.
Meschkin rugs are distinguished by their large-scale geometric patterns, often arranged on dark base tones. Typical are powerful medallions in the centre of the rug, surrounded by stylised ornaments and borders with repeating geometric motifs. The colour palette predominantly comprises earthy tones such as dark blue, burgundy, brown and various shades of red, complemented by accents in beige and cream.
Characteristic of these rugs are also the so-called Herati patterns and stylised flower and plant ornaments, distributed across the entire field. The patterns appear powerful and masculine without losing their elegance. Meschkin rugs are particularly valued for their balanced proportions and the harmonious coordination of the various design elements, which give the viewer a feeling of calm and stability.
High-quality Meschkin rugs are made exclusively from pure virgin wool sourced from local sheep breeds and distinguished by particular hard-wearing nature. The wool is traditionally hand-spun and dyed with natural dyes, which gives the rugs their characteristic colour depth and stability. The knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 150,000 knots per square metre, with the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot) being used.
The robust knotting technique and the use of high-quality materials ensure an exceptional longevity of these rugs. Meschkin rugs develop a beautiful patina with the years and are often passed down across generations. The firm structure and dense knotting make them particularly resistant to wear, which is why they can also find their place in heavily frequented areas.
Meschkin rugs fit excellently into both classic and modern interior styles. Their earthy colour tones and geometric patterns harmonise particularly well with wooden furniture and create a warm, cosy atmosphere. Thanks to their robust nature they are suitable for both living spaces and representative areas such as entrance halls or offices. The medium to large formats make them ideal for living and dining rooms.
Care of Meschkin rugs is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional rotation suffice for normal domestic use. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Thanks to their robust structure these rugs also tolerate more intensive cleaning without loss of quality. With proper care, Meschkin rugs retain their original beauty for decades and may even gain in value.
