Mahal rugs are among the most highly regarded Persian knotted works and convince through their robust quality and characteristic patterns. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have found an exquisite selection of these traditional rugs from the eponymous region in central Iran since 1977. Our hand-picked Mahal rugs unite centuries-old knotting tradition with timeless elegance.
The Mahal region lies in the central Iranian highlands, about 350 kilometres south of Tehran. This fertile stretch of country between the cities of Arak and Isfahan has been known for its rug knotting for centuries. The name "Mahal" means "place" or "location" in Persian and refers to both the geographical region and the characteristic rug type.
The knotting tradition in Mahal reaches back to the 16th century. Particularly under the Safavid era the region experienced an upswing in rug production. The local knotters developed a distinct style, distinguished by geometric base patterns and a particularly hard-wearing structure. These rugs were traditionally made for daily use in Persian households and had to be correspondingly robust.
Mahal rugs are distinguished by their characteristic colour palette of dark reds, deep blue and warm earth tones. Typical features include geometric medallion patterns, often supplemented by floral elements and stylised palmettes. The central medallion is frequently framed by corner panels that take up and continue the main motif harmoniously.
A special feature of Mahal rugs is their somewhat coarse knotting, which gives the patterns a striking, powerful radiance. The borders often show classic Persian motifs such as vine tendrils or stylised blossoms. This rustic elegance makes Mahal rugs ideal companions for traditional as well as modern interior styles. Similar characteristics are also found in Ardakan rugs, which likewise come from the central Iranian area.
Authentic Mahal rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool. The warp consists traditionally of cotton, which lends the rug stability and shape. The Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot) is standard with these rugs and ensures the characteristic firm structure. Knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 150,000 knots per square metre.
The wool used mostly comes from local sheep breeds and is dyed with natural colourants. Madder for the reds, indigo for the deep blue and various plant extracts for the earth tones shape the authentic colour scheme. This traditional dyeing technique lends the rugs their characteristic colour depth and resistance, similar to Ghoutshan rugs from the neighbouring region.
Mahal rugs are excellent for living spaces with a higher degree of use. Their robust structure makes them ideal for entrance areas, dining rooms or family rooms. The warm colour tones harmonise with both classic furniture and modern interior concepts. They look particularly beautiful in combination with wooden furniture and warm wall colours.
Care of Mahal rugs is straightforward. Regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile preserves the structure. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Owing to their robust quality, these rugs are particularly long-lived and develop a beautiful patina over the years. Golpayegan rugs and Moud rugs from related knotting regions also prove to be similarly easy-care.
