Ilam rugs represent the authentic knotting art of the eponymous Iranian province on the Iraqi border. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered a curated selection of these special Persian rugs since 1977. Their distinctive patterns and robust quality make them prized collector's pieces. Our hand-picked rugs represent the centuries-old tradition of this lesser-known but high-grade knotting region.

Origin and history of Ilam rugs

Ilam Province lies in western Iran, directly on the Iraqi border, and is characterised by a diverse ethnic composition. It is home mainly to Kurdish and Lur tribes who have developed their own knotting traditions. The region is sometimes transliterated as Islam Province, reflecting the Arabic spelling. Rug production is concentrated mainly in smaller villages and nomadic communities.

The knotting tradition in Ilam is strongly influenced by neighbouring regions, particularly Kurdish culture and the techniques of the Hamadan area. Historically these rugs were produced primarily for families' own use and only rarely for trade. This explains their relative rarity on the international market and makes authentic pieces particularly valuable.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Ilam rugs are distinguished by geometric patterns frequently interspersed with floral elements. Typical features include medallions in the centre of the field, surrounded by stylised floral motifs and geometric borders. The colour palette moves predominantly in warm earth tones: rust red, deep blue, brown and beige dominate, complemented by accents of ivory and occasionally green.

A characteristic feature is the somewhat more rustic execution of the patterns compared with urban Persian rugs. Weavers interpret traditional designs freely, giving each rug an individual character. Kurdish ornamentation influences also appear frequently, such as stylised animal depictions or tribal geometric forms. These variations make every Borchalou rug or Ilam rug a one-of-a-kind piece.

Material and knotting technique

Most Ilam rugs are knotted exclusively from virgin wool, for the pile as well as the warp and weft. The wool is sourced from local sheep flocks and traditionally dyed with natural colours, which produces the characteristic somewhat muted tones. Wool quality is usually very good, as the climatic conditions of the region favour high-grade wool production.

Knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 150,000 knots per square metre, placing them in the medium quality category. The Persian Senneh knot is used, ensuring good durability. The somewhat coarser knotting lends the rugs their characteristic texture and makes them particularly hard-wearing. Like Afshar Sirjan rugs, they are well suited to daily use.

Interior styling and care

Ilam rugs are excellent for living spaces where a warm, authentic atmosphere is desired. Their earthy tones harmonise particularly well with natural materials such as wood and leather. Thanks to their robust construction they can also be used in more frequented areas such as hallways or dining rooms. The geometric patterns fit both traditional and modern interior concepts.

Care is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional rotation are usually sufficient. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. The natural wool and solid knotting ensure a long service life. With proper care these Persian rugs can retain their beauty for decades and may even gain in value.
