Light Red Rugs

Light red brings luminosity and warmth into a room. Almost all our light red rugs are hand-knotted Oriental rugs from Persia, often with a medallion, plus a few modern kilims and designer rugs.

Light red rugs in the room

A light, clear red looks lively and inviting. It is stronger than pink and fresher than dark red, and it instantly makes a rug the focal point of the room. So that the colour does not take over, it needs calm partners: light walls, simple furniture and natural materials.

In the dining room

Under a dining table in light wood, a light red rug adds a cheerful accent. An adequate size is important: about 60 to 70 centimetres of rug should remain free all around the table so that the chairs do not slip over the edge when pushed back. Sizes such as 200 x 300 cm or 170 x 240 cm therefore often work well. You will find more on this under Dining Room Rugs.

In the hallway

Almost one in five of our light red rugs is a runner, many of them between two and three metres long. In the hallway, the red glows even with little daylight and gives long, narrow spaces structure. Our hallway rugs offer a larger selection of runners.

Which light red rugs does Morgenland offer?

Nearly all our light red rugs are hand-knotted rugs, and the great majority are Persian rugs. A few come from Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are knotted mainly from virgin wool, and some from particularly soft kork wool. Almost all are classic Oriental rugs; a small selection of modern rugs complements them, including kilims from Maimana, designer rugs and vintage-look designs.

Bidjar

A quarter of the light red rugs are Bidjar rugs from western Persia. They are very densely knotted, heavy and hold their shape well, which is why they are considered particularly durable. Typical features are large medallions and strong colours, in which light red often comes together with dark blue and ivory.

Hamadan, Qaraja and Heriz

The Hamadan region produces boldly patterned village rugs such as Hosseinabad; we show a larger selection under Hamadan Rugs. Qaraja and Heriz rugs with large, angular medallions come from north-west Persia. Overall, almost three quarters of all light red rugs feature a medallion.

Sizes and shapes

Around four in five light red rugs are rectangular, and the rest are almost exclusively runners. Common sizes are 200 x 300 cm, 170 x 240 cm and 150 x 200 cm, and for smaller rooms 100 x 150 cm and 80 x 120 cm. Round and square shapes are rare.

Which colours go with light red?

  • White and light grey, which make the red look clear and fresh.
  • Dark blue as the classic counterpart from the pattern.
  • Sand and natural wood for a warm, Mediterranean effect.
  • Fir green in small doses for a strong complementary contrast.
  • Black for graphic accents, for example in lamps or picture frames.

Frequently asked questions about light red rugs

Can a small room take a light red rug?

Yes, if the size is right. A small rug or a runner adds colour without covering the whole floor. The more light areas the pattern has, the lighter the rug looks.

Does light red fade in the sun?

Strong, direct sunlight can lighten any rug colour slightly over time. If the rug lies by a window, it is best to turn it occasionally so that the colour changes evenly.

How do I recognise a Bidjar rug?

A Bidjar feels firm and heavy and can hardly be folded, because the knots sit very densely. Typical features are a large, often stepped medallion and strong colours that stay clear even after years. Thanks to this robustness, it also suits heavily used rooms such as the hallway or dining room.

We show all shades of red under Red Rugs, deeper variants among the dark red rugs and earthier ones among the rust rugs.
