Cream Oriental Rugs

In an oriental rug, cream is a light, warm base tone against which medallions and tendrils stand out clearly. Here you will find only oriental rugs with a cream ground, almost all of them hand-knotted.

Cream as the base tone of an oriental rug

In a cream oriental rug, a warm off-white forms the ground. Medallions, tendrils and borders stand out clearly against this light background without looking harsh. A room appears more open and brighter with it than with a red or dark blue rug. On this page you will see only rugs in the oriental style; you will find modern designs in this shade under Cream Rugs.

Nain, Tabriz and Moud with a light ground

The most common are cream Nain rugs in the qualities 6La, 9La and 12La; the combination of cream and blue is typical of Nain. Also strongly represented are Tabriz rugs, above all in 50 Raj, and Moud rugs from eastern Iran. They are joined by Mashhad, Gholtogh, Bidjar, Sarough and a few Isfahan rugs. Almost all pieces come from Persia, some from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China.

Wool, Kurk wool and silk outlines

The pile is made of new wool or Kurk wool, the fine wool from the shoulder and neck area of the sheep. Many rugs have silk knotted into them: it traces outlines and flowers and shimmers on the light ground depending on how the light falls. Most pieces are finely knotted, some very finely, a few with around one million knots per square metre or more.

From small mats to large living room rugs

The selection ranges from pieces under 60 x 90 cm to sizes of 400 x 600 cm. The most common are 150 x 200 cm and 200 x 300 cm. For hallways and bedrooms there are cream runners, some over four metres long; round and square rugs are less common.

Furnishing with cream

A cream oriental rug goes well with oak and walnut, with linen, brass and light walls. On dark parquet or slate floors, it sets a clear, light accent. In small rooms it makes the space look larger; in large ones it creates a calm centre that leaves room for bold furniture.

Frequently asked questions about cream oriental rugs

Is a light oriental rug impractical in everyday life?

Less than is often thought. Medallions and tendrils make small marks less noticeable than on a plain light rug. Vacuum regularly, blot spills straight away and entrust the rug to our rug cleaning service for a thorough wash.

How does cream differ from beige and white?

Cream lies in between: warmer than pure white, lighter than sand. Even lighter pieces are shown on the white oriental rugs page; you will find earthier tones under beige oriental rugs.

Are all the rugs on this page hand-knotted?

Almost all. A few pieces are handwoven; you will find this information on each rug.
