Touiserkan rugs from the eponymous Iranian city stand for robust quality and traditional knotting craft. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have received hand-picked examples of this prized Persian rug type since 1977 — pieces that convince through their characteristic patterns and durable workmanship.
Touiserkan lies in Hamadan Province in western Iran and has been an important rug-knotting centre for centuries. The town benefits from its location between the knotting centres of Isfahan and Hamadan, enabling it to absorb various stylistic directions and merge them into a character of its own. Tuyserkan rugs, as they are sometimes spelled in alternative transliteration, reflect this cultural diversity in their designs.
The knotting tradition in Touiserkan reaches back to the 16th century, with the region becoming particularly known for its hard-wearing rugs. Unlike the finer knotting workshops of Isfahan or Kashan, the weavers in Touiserkan concentrated on robust utility rugs that would accompany everyday life in Iranian households for decades.
Touiserkan rugs are distinguished by geometric patterns and a balanced relationship between central and border designs. Herati patterns are frequently found with their characteristic fish shapes and floral elements that run through the entire field. The central medallion is often surrounded by smaller geometric patterns, lending the rug a harmonious overall impression.
The colour palette traditionally moves in warm earth tones: deep reds and browns dominate the base field, while the borders are often kept in contrasting blue or beige tones. These natural colours arise from plant dyes and develop a beautiful patina over the years. Modern Touiserkan workshops also experiment with brighter colour combinations but remain faithful to the geometric formal language.
Most Touiserkan rugs are knotted from high-quality virgin wool sourced from sheep in the mountainous Hamadan region. This wool is particularly hard-wearing and absorbs colours well. The warp usually consists of cotton, lending the rug stability and preventing deformation. Examples with silk weft for special sheen are also occasionally found.
Knot density typically lies between 100,000 and 250,000 knots per square metre, using the Persian Senneh knot. This medium knot density enables both detailed patterns and a robust, everyday-suitable structure. Like Ardakan rugs or Moud rugs, Touiserkan workshops combine traditional craftsmanship with practical everyday suitability.
Touiserkan rugs are excellently suited to living spaces with high use. Their robust structure makes them an ideal choice for families, while the classic patterns suit both traditional and modern interior styles. The warm tones create a cosy atmosphere and combine well with wooden furniture and natural materials.
Care is limited to regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning. Through the use of high-quality materials and solid knotting technique, these Persian rugs develop a beautiful patina across decades and, with good care, can last for several generations. Smaller stains can often be removed by gentle dabbing with a damp cloth.
