Where this format fits

• Large living rooms: sofa, armchairs and coffee table stand fully on the rug.
• Open-plan kitchen-living rooms: to set the living area apart without any built division.
• Dining rooms: beneath long tables for six to eight people.
• Large bedrooms: beneath the bed, with a generous overhang on three sides.
• Period rooms: where high ceilings and large floor areas make smaller rugs look lost.

Effect and placement

At this size, preparation decides. Measure the free floor area exactly and mark the dimensions on the floor with masking tape before you order. That shows you at once whether doors still swing open and whether enough distance remains to cupboards and radiators.

Keep at least 30 to 50 centimetres clear to the wall all round. With large rugs this visible band of floor matters more than with small ones: without it the room looks carpeted rather than furnished. Reckon with the weight, too. Large hand-knotted wool rugs are heavy, which makes unrolling and later turning them considerably easier with two people.

Oriental or modern

In this format our Oriental rugs are hand-knotted individual pieces with a complete classical pattern order. In front of plain, modern furnishings they have their strongest effect, because there the decoration competes with no other ornament. Among the modern rugs you will find large, quiet surfaces and discreet textures that hold an open space together without weighing it down.

Other sizes and shapes

For connecting routes between zones, runners suit. Beneath round dining tables, round rugs read more coherently, and in roughly square rooms square rugs are the more suitable base shape. If even this format is not enough, the next rectangle up is a better solution than two rugs laid side by side.

Material and care

Wool is the most reliable choice in large formats: hard-wearing, naturally dirt-repellent and warming. In hand-knotted pieces a cotton foundation gives stability and keeps the surface flat. Low pile suits dining and circulation areas, high pile living and sleeping areas. Turn the rug once a year so that traffic routes are not worn on one side only, and have it cleaned professionally every few years, depending on how hard it is worked.

Is 250 x 350 cm too large for a normal living room?

In rooms from about 20 square metres the format works well, provided a band of floor stays visible all round. In smaller rooms, 200 x 300 cm is the more coherent choice.

How heavy is a rug this size?
