Rugs in 200 x 300 cm: generous for living and dining rooms

200 x 300 cm is the format for rooms in which a rug genuinely takes over the floor beneath the furniture. A complete seating group with sofa, armchairs and coffee table finds room on it, and in a dining room it carries a table for six people together with the chairs.

At this size a rug changes a room noticeably: it dampens sound, makes hard floors warm and gives open-plan layouts a recognisable centre. At the same time the choice matters more, because an area this large is the dominant element in the room.

Where this format fits

• Large living room: the whole seating group stands on the rug, not just the front feet.
• Dining room: beneath a table for six, with enough margin for the chairs.
• Open-plan living area: as a clear division of the living space from the kitchen or dining place.
• Bedroom: beneath a double bed, so that it shows generously on three sides.

Effect and placement

Measure the free floor area before buying, without fail. At this size rugs quickly run into doors, radiators or cupboards. Allow 30 to 50 centimetres of gap to the wall all round: it is the visible band of floor that makes a room feel generous.

In the dining room the margin rule applies especially. With a table of 180 x 90 cm, roughly 55 to 60 centimetres remain all round, which is enough for most chairs. For longer tables you should reach for the next size up.

Because the area is large, a strong pattern works harder here than in small formats. If the room already has patterned curtains or upholstery, a quieter drawing is the safer choice.

Oriental or modern

Large hand-knotted pieces are the core of our range of Oriental rugs. In this format the full order of the pattern comes into its own, and irregularities in the dyeing, known as abrash, give the surface depth. Among the modern rugs you will find large plain surfaces and discreet textures that calm an open room rather than filling it further.

Other sizes and shapes

If the area is not quite enough, the next rectangle up makes more sense than two rugs lying side by side. For connecting routes, runners suit; beneath round dining tables, round rugs read more coherently; and for roughly square rooms there are square rugs.

Material and care

Wool is the most reliable choice in large formats: hard-wearing, dirt-repellent and pleasantly warm. In hand-knotted rugs, a cotton foundation keeps the surface lying flat. Low pile is more practical in a dining area, high pile more comfortable in living and sleeping areas. Large rugs should be turned once a year, so that traffic routes are not worn on one side only. Professional rug cleaning is worth arranging every few years, depending on how hard the rug is worked.
