Known as a bed size

When they hear 160 x 200 cm, many people first think of a mattress. As a rug, it is a wide, compact rectangle that offers more surface than 140 x 200 cm and takes up less space than 170 x 240 cm. The page shows rugs around 150 to 169 cm wide and between 190 and 215 cm long, because hand-knotted pieces rarely match the nominal size exactly. You will find a larger selection with two metres of length among the rugs in 150 x 200 cm.

In the living room and bedroom

In front of a sofa with a coffee table, a rug of this size brings the seating group together without reaching under the armchairs. In the bedroom, it works well laid across under a single bed 90 cm wide: it then shows a good half metre on both sides. In a study, too, the format creates a clear island.

Tabriz in 40 and 50 Raj

The largest group is formed by Tabriz rugs, above all in 50 Raj, many also in 40 Raj. Raj describes the fineness: the knots are counted across a width of about seven centimetres, so 50 Raj is finer than 40 Raj. Tabriz rugs often show a medallion with tendrils and are frequently embellished with silk. Alongside them you will find Nain in the fine 6La quality.

Gabbeh and Kilims

Persian Gabbeh rugs with their thick, high pile are strongly represented; they usually show a few clear motifs on a calm ground. Equally common are Kilims from Afghanistan, including from Maimene, and from Fars; many of them are handwoven and can be used on both sides. Ziegler rugs from Afghanistan and Pakistan bring softly drawn floral patterns. Khal-Mohammadi rugs from Afghanistan complete the selection with mostly deep red pieces.

Origin, colours and modern pieces

Most rugs come from Persia, a large share from Afghanistan, others from India and Pakistan. Multicoloured pieces, red and beige shape the picture, followed by dark red and dark blue. A significant part of the selection is modern, with abstract, striped or plain surfaces; the modern rugs page shows more of them.

Frequently asked questions about rugs in 160 x 200 cm

Does a rug in 160 x 200 cm fit under a double bed?

Under a bed of the same size, it disappears almost completely. For a double bed, larger formats are more suitable, such as the rugs in 200 x 300 cm, which show on three sides, or two runners along the sides of the bed.

Can I turn a Kilim over?

Many handwoven Kilims can be used on both sides. If you turn them over now and then, the wear is distributed evenly. Whether a piece is reversible is stated in its description.

What is the difference from 150 x 200 cm?

A rug in 160 x 200 cm is ten centimetres wider. That does not sound like much, but it gives a little more leeway in front of a wide sofa.
