Long and narrow

A rug in 120 x 200 cm is considerably longer than it is wide, which places it between a classic rug and a runner; some pieces on this page are even classified as runners. The page shows rugs around 110 to 129 cm wide and 190 to 215 cm long. The rugs in 150 x 200 cm page offers a wider selection of around two metres in length; you will find slightly shorter pieces under rugs in 120 x 180 cm.

Lengthwise beside the bed

As most beds are 200 cm long, a rug in this format lies lengthwise along the side of the bed and accompanies it from head to foot. In narrow rooms, in front of a bookshelf or under a long desk, the picture is the same: the rug follows the edge of the furniture. The format also works well in an open-plan kitchen or a wide hallway.

Baluch, Gabbeh and Hamadan

The most common are Baluch rugs in dark shades of red and blue. Almost as often you will find Persian Gabbeh, whose pile is thick and high, and village rugs from Hamadan with bold designs. Khal-Mohammadi rugs from Afghanistan and densely knotted Bidjar follow. If you prefer something finer, choose a Nain in 9La or 6La. Ziegler from Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as Sarough round off the range.

Kilims, modern and older pieces

Kilims from Fars and Afghanistan make up a large share of the handwoven pieces; these can be used on both sides. Modern rugs form a smaller part. Alongside new rugs, there are individual older and semi-antique pieces, and some show figurative motifs. Red, beige and multicoloured rugs are the most common; most come from Persia, followed by Afghanistan.

Frequently asked questions about rugs in 120 x 200 cm

Is a rug in 120 x 200 cm a runner?

Usually not. Runners are generally narrower rugs; some pieces on this page are nevertheless classified as such. The runners page shows narrow formats in many lengths.

How do I place it beside a double bed?

For a double bed you need two rugs, one on each side. Similar colours and patterns keep the look calm; you will find more ideas under bedroom rugs.

What distinguishes a Baluch?

Baluch rugs are knotted by nomads and in villages in the border region between Iran and Afghanistan. Dark, warm colours, geometric motifs and rather manageable formats are typical.
