Rudbar rugs are among the prized Persian rugs from the province of Gilan in north-western Iran. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have presented a carefully chosen collection of these special knotted works since 1977. The craft tradition of the Rudbar region combines with modern demands for quality and durability.
The town of Rudbar lies in Gilan Province between the Caspian Sea and the Alborz Mountains. This geographical setting shapes both the climate and the cultural influences of the region. Rug knotting here has a centuries-old tradition, passed from one generation to the next. Many families in Rudbar have lived from rug production for generations.
The Gilan region stands for an independent knotting tradition within Persian rug art. Rudbar rugs developed as a regional variant with characteristic patterns and colour combinations. Proximity to the Caspian Sea influenced both the available materials and the trade routes through which these rugs were exported.
Rudbar rugs are distinguished by geometric base patterns and harmonious colouring. Medallion patterns in the centre of the rug, surrounded by symmetrical borders, are typical. The colour palette moves predominantly in warm earth tones such as rust red, dark blue and beige. Cream and golden accents are also frequently found in the patterns.
Particularly characteristic of Rudbar rugs are the finely worked corner ornaments and the often multiply staggered borders. These give the rugs an elegant frame and emphasise the central motifs. The design language combines traditional Persian elements with regional features of Gilan Province.
Rudbar rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool. The wool usually comes from local sheep farming and is processed by tried-and-tested methods. Cotton typically serves as the base fabric, providing stability and durability. Knot density lies in the medium to upper range, enabling both detailed patterns and a robust structure.
The weavers predominantly use the Persian knot, also known as the Senneh knot. This technique enables precise pattern definition and an even surface. After knotting the rugs are sheared and acquire their characteristic surface texture. The workmanship follows traditional standards applied in the region for generations.
Rudbar rugs are suited to living spaces with classic to contemporary furnishings. Their warm colouring harmonises particularly well with wooden furniture and natural materials. The medium knot density makes them suitable for areas with normal use. They develop their aesthetic effect optimally in living rooms, bedrooms or studies.
Caring for Rudbar rugs requires regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning. With proper treatment these wool rugs develop a beautiful patina over the years. Direct sunlight should be avoided to protect the colours. In the case of stains, prompt treatment with suitable cleaning agents is recommended.
