Kelim Senneh rugs are among the most refined flat-weaves of the Persian rug tradition. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have found these special pieces from the Kurdish town of Senneh since 1977, known for their exceptionally fine weaving technique and artistic design. Every Kilim Senneh combines centuries-old craftsmanship with timeless aesthetics.

Origin and history of Kelim Senneh rugs

Kelim Senneh rugs come from the Iranian city of Sanandaj, formerly known as Senneh. The city lies in the western province of Kordestan and has been an important centre of rug production for centuries. The Kurdish weavers of this region have developed a unique tradition that differs markedly from other Persian kilim types.

The history of Senneh weaving reaches back to the 18th century, when the city became an important trading centre under the rule of the Safavids. Its strategic location on the trade routes between Persia and the Ottoman Empire favoured cultural exchange and the development of distinctive weaving techniques. This tradition is still cultivated today by Kurdish families who pass their knowledge from generation to generation.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Kelim Senneh rugs are distinguished by their exceptionally fine structure and characteristic patterns. The best-known design is the so-called Herati pattern with its stylised fish and palm leaves, often surrounded by an elegant frame. Geometric medallions in the centre of the rug are another typical feature, framed by detailed borders.

The palette of Senneh kilims is particularly refined and often comprises warm earth tones such as rust red, dark blue, beige and brown. High-quality examples also show bold accents in green or gold. The patterns are usually small-scale and delicate, reflecting the high level of weaving experience of the craftspeople. A characteristic feature is also the different appearance of the front and back, with both sides usable.

Material and knotting technique

Genuine Kelim Senneh rugs are woven exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from sheep in the mountainous regions of Kurdistan. This wool is particularly hard-wearing and develops a beautiful patina over time. For especially valuable pieces, silk components are also used for contours and details, lending the rug a silken sheen.

The weaving technique of Senneh kilims differs from other Persian flat-weaves through particularly dense workmanship. The so-called Senneh knot is set so tightly that up to 400,000 knots per square metre can be achieved. This high knot density enables the rendering of the finest details and makes the rugs particularly long-lasting. The weaving time for a Kelim Senneh can take several months depending on size and complexity.

Interior styling and care

Sanandaj kilims are excellent for various living areas and interior styles. Their flat structure makes them ideal for heavily frequented areas, since they do not kink or form folds. They fit both classic and modern interiors and can be used as a floor rug, wall hanging or even as a throw. Similarly versatile are Kelim Fars rugs or Kelim Old rugs.

Caring for a Kelim Senneh is relatively straightforward. Regular vacuuming and occasional turning are usually sufficient for daily care. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Stains should be removed immediately, with treatment always in the direction of the fibres. With good care these kilims can last several generations and often even increase in value.
