Kelim Maimene rugs are among the most authentic representatives of Afghan weaving tradition. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have presented a carefully curated selection of these special flat-weaves from the Maimana region since 1977. Every rug embodies centuries-old craftsmanship and the cultural identity of northern Afghanistan.
Kelim Maimene rugs come from Faryab Province in northern Afghanistan, whose capital Maimana gives the rug type its name. This region lies strategically on the historic trade routes between Central Asia and the Near East, which favoured the development of an independent weaving tradition. The nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of the area, particularly Turkmens and Uzbeks, perfected the kilim weaving technique over generations.
Unlike their Persian or Anatolian relatives, the Kilim Maimene developed a characteristic formal language that reflects both Turkmen and Afghan influences. The weaving tradition was practised mainly by women and passed from mother to daughter, which preserved regional particularities and family traditions across the centuries.
Maimana Kelims are distinguished by their bold, earthy palette. Warm reds, deep blue, ochre and natural brown tones dominate, all obtained from plant and mineral dyes. The geometric patterns follow traditional schemes: medallions, diamonds and stylised animal motifs are as characteristic as the typical borders with triangular and zigzag ornaments.
A special feature of Kelim Maimene rugs is their structural diversity. Alongside classic flat-weaves there are also examples with partial pile-pattern elements or woven-in fringes. The weaving density varies according to intended use: finer pieces served representative purposes, while more robust variants were used as everyday rugs.
Genuine Kelim Maimene rugs are made exclusively from hand-spun sheep wool sourced from the flocks of the local nomadic tribes. This wool is distinguished by its robustness and natural lanolin content, which gives the rugs particular longevity. The wool is traditionally dyed with natural colours: madder for reds, indigo for blue and various local plants for yellow and brown shades.
The weaving technique follows the classic kilim process with weft threads that do not run through the entire rug but only within their respective colour fields. This produces the characteristic slits between colour fields, which are either left open or sewn up afterwards. The weaving density typically lies between 40,000 and 80,000 knots per square metre.
Kelim Maimene rugs are excellent for modern living concepts, since their geometric patterns and warm colours fit both classic and contemporary interior styles. Thanks to their flat structure they are particularly suited to high-traffic areas and can be placed under furniture without difficulty. Their natural tones harmonise especially well with wooden furniture and neutral wall colours.
Care is straightforward: regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile is sufficient for daily upkeep. For heavier soiling we recommend professional rug cleaning. Thanks to their robust structure, Kelim Maimene rugs are long-lasting companions that, with proper care, will last for decades. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent the natural colours from fading.
Our range includes both classic and rare variants of the Kelim Maimene, complemented by related Afghan styles such as Kelim Afghan rugs, Akhche rugs and Khal Mohammadi rugs. In our showroom in Hamburg's Speicherstadt you can experience the quality and beauty of these special wool rugs in person.
