Kayseri rugs are among the most remarkable knotted products of the Turkish rug tradition and have been a valued part of our collection at Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg since 1977. These hand-knotted rugs from the central Anatolian town of Kayseri combine centuries-old craft with timeless elegance. Our experienced team in the Hamburg Speicherstadt is happy to advise you on choosing the right Kayseri rug for your home.
Kayseri, the ancient Caesarea Mazaca, lies in the heart of central Anatolia and looks back on a rug-knotting tradition spanning more than a thousand years. The town was already an important trading centre on the Silk Road in the time of the Byzantine Empire and developed into a major centre of Turkish rug production. Its geographical position between Europe and Asia shaped both the cultural identity and the artistic influences in rug making.
Kayseri rugs gained international recognition particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. During this heyday, the region's manufactories produced rugs of exceptional quality, taking up both traditional Anatolian patterns and influences from Persian and Caucasian knotting art. This cultural diversity is still reflected today in the characteristic designs of Kayseri rugs.
Kayseri rugs are distinguished by their refined geometric and floral patterns. Central Anatolian medallion patterns are typical, often surrounded by complex corner panels. Stylised tulips, carnations and other blossom motifs are frequently found, filling the field in symmetrical arrangements. This pattern language combines Ottoman court art with regional folk-art traditions and creates an unmistakable aesthetic.
The colour palette of Kayseri rugs is marked by warm earth tones such as rust red, dark blue and beige, complemented by powerful accents in green or gold. These harmonious colour combinations arise from the use of natural dyes, which give the rug a warm radiance. Particularly characteristic is the fine execution of the borders, which often combine several narrow bands with different ornaments.
Traditional Kayseri rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from local sheep flocks. This Anatolian wool is particularly hard-wearing and develops a characteristic sheen with use. Some examples also feature silk accents, which highlight certain pattern elements and lend the rug additional lustre.
The knotting technique follows the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot), which ensures a particularly firm and durable structure. With knot densities between 200,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, Kayseri rugs achieve impressive detail accuracy. This high knot count enables the precise execution of complex patterns and contributes to their exceptional durability.
Kayseri rugs are excellent for representative living areas such as living rooms, dining rooms or reception areas. Their warm colours and timeless patterns harmonise with both classic and modern interior styles. The robust properties of the materials used also make them suitable for more frequented areas, where they retain their beauty for decades.
Care of a Kayseri rug is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional professional rug cleaning preserve the original beauty. The natural materials are robust and develop a beautiful patina through use. With proper treatment these wool rugs can outlast generations and often become valued heirlooms.
