Origin and history of Heriz rugs

The town of Heriz lies in the Azerbaijani province of East Azerbaijan in north-western Iran, about 60 kilometres east of Tabriz. This region has been known for its outstanding rug knotting for centuries. Heriz rugs stem from a tradition reaching back to the 19th century, when local weavers began developing their characteristic large-format medallion patterns.

Rug production in Heriz reached its peak between 1880 and 1930, when these rugs gained great popularity in Europe and America in particular. The strategic location of the region on historic trade routes enabled the export of these high-quality weavings throughout the world. Today, antique Heriz rugs from this period are considered especially valuable and sought after.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Heriz rugs are unmistakable in their large-scale geometric patterns. The typical design shows a central, usually octagonal medallion, surrounded by stylised floral and vine motifs. These pattern elements are distinctly geometrically abstracted, setting them apart from the more flowing patterns of other Persian rugs such as Ardakan rugs or the finer Moud rugs.

The colour palette of Heriz rugs is traditionally dominated by warm reds and blues, complemented by ivory, green and occasionally yellow. The characteristic rust red often used as a base colour gives these rugs their unmistakable presence. The strong colours come from the use of natural dyes such as madder for the reds and indigo for the blue shades. These robust colours contribute to the legendary longevity of Heriz rugs.

Material and knotting technique

Heriz rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool sourced from sheep in the mountainous regions of north-western Iran. This wool is distinguished by its particular firmness and natural sheen. The warp is usually made of cotton, lending the rug stability and enabling the characteristic rectangular shape of the knots.

Knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre, using the Turkish knot (Ghiordes knot). This medium knot density enables the characteristic geometric patterns and contributes to the robust structure. Compared with finer weavings such as Golpayegan rugs or the silky Ghoutshan rugs, Heriz rugs are particularly hard-wearing and well suited to daily use.

Interior styling and care

Heriz rugs are excellent for living spaces with heavy use. Their robust properties make them ideal for living and dining rooms, where they act as a central focal point. The warm colour tones harmonise particularly well with classic and rustic interior styles, but they also set striking accents in modern rooms. As part of the large family of Persian rugs, they bring authentic Oriental atmosphere to any space.

Care for Heriz rugs is straightforward: regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional professional cleaning preserves their beauty for decades. With appropriate treatment, these rugs can last for several generations and may even gain in value. For a professional rug cleaning we are happy to advise you.
