Blue rugs in the oriental style

After red, blue is the most important colour of the classic oriental rug. Traditionally it was dyed with indigo, and in many knotting regions a deep dark blue forms the ground for medallions and borders. Blue looks calm, clear and elegant – a blue oriental rug brings depth to a room without making it look busy. This page shows only oriental rugs in shades of blue; you will find modern blue rugs in our Blue Rugs collection.

Nain, Tabriz, Ziegler and Bidjar

The largest group is Nain rugs in 6La, 9La and 12La, often with knotted-in silk. Also strongly represented are Tabriz rugs in 50 Raj, Ziegler rugs, Bidjar rugs and Mashhad rugs. They are joined by Nahavand rugs, Ghom and Hamadan rugs, as well as Kilims from Fars.

Silk, wool and fine knotting

Almost all blue oriental rugs in our range are hand-knotted, and some are handwoven. Many contain silk, which makes the blue appear lighter or darker depending on how the light falls; otherwise the pile is made of new wool or Kurk wool. Some are among the exceptionally finely knotted pieces, with up to one million knots per square metre. Most of the rugs come from Persia, some from Afghanistan; alongside new pieces, you will find some older and semi-antique rugs.

Sizes and shapes

Our blue oriental rugs come in almost every size, from the small 60 x 90 cm format up to 200 x 300 cm and larger. For hallways and stairs there are blue oriental runners, as well as square oriental rugs and round pieces.

Furnishing with a blue oriental rug

Dark blue is one of the most versatile rug colours: it goes with light and dark wood, and with white, grey and beige. With cognac, mustard yellow or rust it creates a warm contrast; with white and brass, a classic, almost maritime look. Light blue and petrol look fresher and suit bedrooms and studies.

Frequently asked questions about blue oriental rugs

Why are many oriental rugs dark blue?

Traditionally, blue could be dyed from indigo in many gradations. That is why, after red, dark blue is the most common ground colour of classic oriental rugs – in our range, too, dark blue rugs make up the largest part of the blue selection.

Is a blue oriental rug too dark for the living room?

Not if the walls and furniture are light. If you prefer something lighter, choose a rug in light blue or one with a light ground and blue patterns, such as a Nain or Ziegler.
