Waramin rugs are among the most prized Persian knotted works and stand for centuries-old weaving tradition from the eponymous Iranian city. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered you a carefully selected collection of these special oriental rugs since 1977 — pieces that convince through their geometric patterns and robust quality. Every Waramin rug in our range has been checked by experienced experts for authenticity and quality.
The city of Waramin, also known as Varamin, lies about 35 kilometres south-east of Tehran in the Iranian province of Tehran. This region looks back on a rug-knotting tradition spanning over 800 years, with roots reaching back to the Seljuk era. The strategic location on the trade routes between the capital and the southern provinces shaped both the cultural development and the characteristic designs of local rug production.
Over the centuries Waramin developed into an important centre of Persian rug art. The knotters of the region perfected their techniques across generations, creating a distinctive style that clearly differs from other Persian rug regions. The tradition is still continued today by local family businesses passing on centuries-old knowledge from one generation to the next.
Waramin rugs are distinguished by their characteristic geometric patterns, mainly based on a central medallion. The classic Waramin design often shows a large diamond-shaped or oval medallion in the centre, surrounded by smaller geometric elements and floral motifs. Particularly typical are the so-called "Mina Khani" patterns — a repeating design of blossoms and vines occurring in various variations.
The colour palette of Varamin rugs is traditionally rather restrained and dominated by warm red, blue and beige tones. Cream and ivory base tones are also frequently encountered and often combined with darker accent colours. The border design usually follows classic Persian traditions with several narrow bands that elegantly frame the main field. This restrained colour scheme makes Ardakan rugs and other Waramin pieces versatile furnishings.
Traditional Waramin rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from sheep in the mountainous regions of central Iran. This wool is distinguished by its natural firmness and characteristic sheen. Knotting is carried out with the Persian knot (Senneh knot), with knot density typically between 120,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre. This medium-to-fine knotting enables both geometric and floral details to be rendered precisely.
The quality of a Waramin rug is shown particularly in the even knotting and clean processing of the edges. As with Ghoutshan rugs, great value is placed on a firm, durable bond. The weft material also consists of wool, while the warp is traditionally made of cotton. This combination of materials ensures the characteristic stability and longevity of Waramin rugs.
Thanks to their robust nature, Waramin rugs are excellent for living spaces with medium to high use. Their muted colours and timeless patterns suit both classic and modern interior styles. In living rooms, dining rooms or hallways these Persian rugs unfold their full effect and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. The medium pile height of about 8-12 millimetres also makes them suitable for use under furniture.
Care of Waramin rugs is straightforward if a few basic rules are observed. Regular vacuuming in the direction of the fibres preserves the beauty of the pile and prevents dirt particles from penetrating. For heavier soiling, a professional rug cleaning is recommended, also used for Golpayegan rugs and other high-quality oriental rugs. With proper care these robust rugs can preserve their original beauty for several decades.
