Sharbabak rugs are among the prized village weavings of Iran and represent centuries-old Persian knotting tradition in its original form. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have found a carefully assembled selection of these special oriental rugs since 1977. The hand-knotted examples from the village of Sharbabak are distinguished by their characteristic geometric patterns and solid workmanship. As an established rug house in the Speicherstadt we offer you authentic pieces with guaranteed origin and quality.
The village of Sharbabak lies in the Persian province of Isfahan and has been known for its rug knotting for generations. The region around Isfahan is considered one of the most significant centres of Iranian rug production, with smaller villages such as Sharbabak having developed their own traditions. The knotters of Sharbabak have refined their characteristic patterns and techniques over centuries while preserving the original character of their village weavings.
Rug production in Sharbabak still follows the traditional methods today, passed down from generation to generation. Every rug is knotted entirely by hand, with the knotters drawing on inherited pattern templates that are in some cases several centuries old. This continuity in production makes Sharbabak rugs authentic representatives of Persian knotting craft.
Sharbabak rugs stand out for their predominantly geometric designs, which differ markedly from the floral patterns of many other Isfahan rugs. Typical features include medallion patterns with angular contours surrounded by stylised vines and geometric borders. The pattern language is rather traditional and down-to-earth, lacking the refinement of urban Isfahan rugs but with a very distinctive village character of its own.
The colour palette of Sharbabak rugs moves traditionally in warm earth tones with strong accents in red, blue and cream. Particularly characteristic is the use of natural plant dyes, which give the rugs their typical depth of colour and liveliness. The combinations are usually harmonious and restrained, making these rugs versatile interior pieces. Similarly structured designs are also found in Borchalou rugs and Jozan rugs, which are also known for their geometric patterns.
Sharbabak rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality virgin wool sourced from the region and prized for its durability. The wool is traditionally hand-spun and dyed with natural colours, giving the rugs their characteristic feel and appearance. The knotting material is robust and long-lasting, so Sharbabak rugs retain their shape and colour brilliance for decades, even with regular use.
Knot density usually lies between 80,000 and 150,000 knots per square metre, representing solid mid-range quality. The Persian knot is used, known for its firmness and the velvety surface it produces. This knotting technique, also applied to Garawan rugs and Joshaghan rugs, ensures the typical durability of Persian village weavings. Further information on the different knotting styles can be found in our Sharbabak entry in the Teppich-Fibel.
Sharbabak rugs are excellently suited to living spaces where a warm, traditional character is desired. Their earthy tones and geometric patterns suit both classic and modern interior styles. They show themselves to particular advantage in drawing rooms, studies or bedrooms, where they can act as a central design element. Their medium knot density makes them ideal for normal residential use.
Caring for a Sharbabak rug is straightforward and follows the general rules for Persian rugs. Regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional rotation are sufficient for daily care. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning that gently treats the natural materials. With the right care, Sharbabak rugs can last for several generations and even gain in beauty over time.
