Shal rugs are among the prized village productions from the Persian highlands and combine traditional knotting with the characteristic patterns of the region. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered a curated collection of these hand-knotted rugs since 1977, convincing through their solid workmanship and authentic designs. Our Shal rugs come from controlled workshops and meet the quality standards our customers expect.

Origin and history of Shal rugs

Shal rugs are produced in small villages of the Iranian provinces, where knotting skills are passed down through generations. The name "Shal" refers to the geographic region of origin, where nomadic and settled tribes have preserved their traditional patterns. These rugs represent the rural knotting tradition of Persia, far from the major manufactory centres.

The knotters of the Shal region have developed their own stylistic peculiarities over centuries, distinct from the courtly traditions of the cities. This folk art is distinguished by a certain originality, expressed in geometric patterns and natural colour palettes. The rugs are usually produced in smaller numbers, making each Shal rug an individual piece.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Shal rugs present themselves with geometric base patterns featuring rhombuses, diamonds and stylised plant motifs. The centre of the rug is often dominated by a medallion-like motif, surrounded by recurring geometric elements. These patterns follow the traditional templates of the region and are knotted without cartoons, creating slight irregularities that lend these rugs their charm.

The colour palette of Shal rugs encompasses warm earth tones such as rust red, dark blue and beige, complemented by cream and brown accents. These colours are still partly produced from natural dyes, resulting in a harmonious and timeless effect. Characteristic are also the often darker borders with repetitive geometric motifs that elegantly frame the main field. Borchalou rugs show similar geometric approaches, while Joshaghan rugs vary with floral elements.

Material and knotting technique

Shal rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool, sourced from local sheep flocks. The warp consists mostly of cotton, lending the rug stability, while the pile is knotted from carefully selected wool. Knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 150,000 knots per square metre, ensuring solid quality without losing the original handcrafted character.

The knotting technique follows the proven Senneh knot (asymmetric knot), which is standard in Persian rug art. After knotting, the rugs are washed and treated through natural drying, giving them their characteristic feel. Processing takes place without industrial aids, resulting in the typical slightly irregular structure that marks genuine handcraft.

Interior styling and care

Thanks to their earthy colours and geometric patterns, Shal rugs are suitable for various interior styles, from traditional to modern-rustic. They unfold their warm appeal particularly in living rooms, dining areas and studies. The medium knot density makes them suitable for everyday use in normally frequented areas, while at the same time bringing enough character for representative rooms.

Care of a Shal rug is limited to regular vacuuming in the direction of the pile and occasional professional rug cleaning. Thanks to the robust wool quality and solid workmanship, these rugs are long-lasting and develop a natural patina over the years. With proper treatment they retain their structure and colour intensity for decades.
