Senneh rugs from Persian Kurdistan are among the finest and most precious weavings in oriental rug art. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg we have offered a select range of these extraordinary rugs since 1977 — pieces distinguished by their incomparable fineness and precision. Our hand-picked Senneh rugs come directly from the region of origin and represent the highest level of Persian craftsmanship.

Origin and history of Senneh rugs

The city of Sanandaj, formerly called Senneh, lies in the west of Iran in the province of Kurdistan and is the home of these legendary rugs. The region looks back on centuries of rug knotting tradition, which reached its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Kurdish knotters of Sanandaj developed a unique technique of their own that sets their rugs apart from all other Persian weavings.

Rug production in Senneh was closely tied to the local history of trade. As an important node on the trade routes between Persia and the Ottoman Empire, the city benefited from cultural exchange and could source high-grade materials. These favourable circumstances enabled the development of a knotting tradition that still sets the standard for quality and refinement today.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Senneh rugs are famous for their exceptionally fine and detailed patterns. Characteristic are the small-scale geometric designs with floral elements, often dominated by a central medallion. Particularly typical are the so-called Herati patterns with their characteristic herringbone motifs and palmettes. The borders usually show complex vine patterns or stylised flowers in multi-coloured execution.

The colour palette of Senneh rugs is marked by understated elegance. Warm reds, deep blue and cream-white base tones predominate, complemented by delicate green and gold accents. The knotters of Sanandaj mastered the art of achieving a particular sense of depth through skilful colour combinations. The rugs often show a silky sheen typical of this region, produced by the special wool quality and knotting technique.

Material and knotting technique

Senneh rugs are knotted exclusively from the finest cork wool, a special wool quality sourced from young lambs in the highlands of Kurdistan. This wool is distinguished by its exceptional fineness and firmness. For particularly precious examples, silk is also used, which enhances the characteristic sheen and enables the finest pattern detail.

The knotting technique of Senneh rugs is unique within Persian rug art. The asymmetric Senneh knot is used, but in a special variant knotted extremely densely. With up to 1,000,000 knots per square metre these rugs achieve a fineness that is rarely surpassed. This high knot density enables the precise execution of the complex patterns and gives the rugs their characteristic firmness and longevity. More details can be found in our Senneh entry in the Teppich-Fibel.

Interior styling and care

Senneh rugs are particularly suited to representative living areas thanks to their fineness and elegance. Their understated colour scheme and the filigree patterns harmonise with both classic and modern interior styles. Owing to their low pile they are ideal for heavily frequented areas. Other fine Persian weavings such as Ardakan rugs or Moud rugs share similar properties but do not reach the extreme fineness of Senneh knotting.

Care of Senneh rugs requires particular attention in keeping with their high quality. Regular vacuuming at low suction is sufficient for daily cleaning. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning that protects the valuable materials. With proper treatment these rugs can last for centuries and develop a special patina over time that further enhances their beauty.
