Shirvan rugs are among the most esteemed representatives of Caucasian knotting art and have held a firm place in the premium range at Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg since 1977. These traditional rugs from the Caucasus combine centuries-old craftsmanship with characteristic geometric patterns. Our hand-picked selection offers authentic quality in various sizes and designs.
Shirvan rugs come from the region of the same name in the south-eastern Caucasus, present-day Azerbaijan. The town of Shirvan, also known as Schirwan, was already an important centre of rug knotting in the Middle Ages. The region lies strategically along the old trade routes between Europe and Asia, which favoured cultural exchange and the development of unique knotting traditions.
The knotting tradition in Shirvan reaches back several centuries and has been passed down from generation to generation. Particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Shirvan rugs reached their peak and were exported all over the world via the Silk Road. This historical significance makes authentic Shirvan rugs sought-after collector's items today, much like Kazak rugs from the neighbouring region.
Shirvan rugs are distinguished by their characteristic geometric patterns, usually dominated by dark base colours. Typical are deep blue, dark red and warm browns, contrasted by lighter accents in white, yellow or light blue. The patterns often show stylised animals, flowers and traditional Caucasian symbols composed in strict geometric arrangement.
Particularly characteristic of Shirvan rugs are the so-called "boteh" patterns, palm-leaf-like forms and stylised animal figures. These designs differ markedly from the patterns of other Caucasian rugs such as Daghestan rugs or Derbent rugs. The borders usually show several narrow bands with geometric ornaments that elegantly frame the central field.
Authentic Shirvan rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality sheep's wool, with silk used for particularly fine examples. The wool usually comes from local sheep breeds and is dyed with natural colours, which gives the rugs their characteristic colour depth and patina. The pile is mostly sheared to medium height, allowing the patterns to stand out clearly.
The knotting technique follows the traditional Ghiordes knot (Turkish knot), known for its durability. Knot density usually lies between 150,000 and 250,000 knots per square metre, making these rugs robust companions for daily use. Like other wool rugs, Shirvan rugs also develop a natural patina over time that further accentuates their character.
Shirvan rugs are excellent for living spaces where a warm, traditional atmosphere is desired. Their earthy tones and geometric patterns suit both classic and modern interior styles. They come into their own particularly well in living rooms and studies, where they can function as central elements.
Caring for Shirvan rugs is relatively straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional professional cleaning are usually sufficient. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Thanks to their robust construction and high-quality materials, well-cared-for Shirvan rugs can last for decades and may even gain in value.
