Sarab rugs from north-western Iranian Azerbaijan are regarded as particularly robust and long-lasting examples of Persian rug art. At Morgenland Teppiche in Hamburg you have found a carefully chosen collection of these traditional runners and kelims since 1977, prized for their hard-wearing quality.

Origin and history of Sarab rugs

Sarab lies in the Azerbaijani province of East Azerbaijan in north-western Iran, about 40 kilometres south of Ardabil. The town has been a centre for the production of robust rugs and kelims for centuries. The region was historically shaped by nomadic tribes and semi-nomads who passed on their weaving techniques across generations.

Rug production in Sarab concentrates mainly on runners and elongated formats, originally developed for practical use in tents and simple dwellings. This tradition of functional weaving still shapes the characteristic design of Sarab rugs today. As with Ardakan rugs, durability stands in the foreground.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Sarab rugs are distinguished by their geometric patterns and earthy colour palette. Diamond-shaped medallions repeating along the rug's length are typical, along with stylised animal motifs and leafy vines. The base colours move mainly in warm tones such as rust red, dark blue, brown and beige, complemented by accents in ivory or dark contrast tones.

Particularly characteristic of Sarab rugs are the long, narrow proportions of the runners, often with a ratio of 1:4 or 1:5. The borders are usually multiply staggered and show classic Persian motifs such as palmettes or geometric ornaments. Whereas Moud rugs favour finer details, Sarab weavers rely on clear, large pattern elements.

Material and knotting technique

Sarab rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality virgin wool sourced from the sheep of the surrounding highland pastures. This wool is particularly resilient and develops a natural patina over time. The warp usually consists of cotton, which gives the rug additional stability. In higher-grade examples, camel wool is occasionally used as well.

Knot density typically lies between 80,000 and 160,000 knots per square metre, using the symmetrical Ghiordes knot. The relatively coarse knotting contributes to the robust construction and enables the characteristic clear pattern lines. Like Ghoutshan rugs, they are designed for longevity.

Interior styling and care

Sarab rugs are excellent for heavily used areas such as hallways, stairways or entrance halls. Their robust construction makes them ideal runners for daily use. The warm, earthy tones harmonise particularly well with rustic and traditional interior styles, but also fit into modern living concepts.

Care is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional turning are usually sufficient. For heavier soiling a professional rug cleaning is recommended. The hard-wearing wool forgives minor mishaps and develops a beautiful patina over the years, lending the rug an even more authentic look.
