Origin and history of Qaraja rugs

Qaraja rugs, also known as Karaja, come from the region around the town of Karadja in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan. This area in north-west Iran has been known for its rug knotting for centuries and lies favourably on old trade routes. Local knotters have preserved their techniques and pattern traditions over generations, creating an unmistakable style of their own.

The knotting tradition in this region goes back several centuries and was shaped primarily by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes. The geographical location between different cultural influences is reflected in the patterns, which combine both Caucasian and Persian elements. Borchalou rugs and other north-west Persian knottings share similar characteristic features.

Characteristics and typical patterns

Qaraja rugs are distinguished by geometric patterns and a rather restrained colour palette. Typical are diamond and hexagonal patterns in the main field, often supplemented by stylised floral motifs and vine borders. The base colours generally move in tones of red, blue and beige, with natural dyes providing the authentic appearance. A characteristic feature is the often asymmetrical arrangement of patterns, which gives village knotting its particular charm.

The borders frequently show several narrow bands with recurring geometric motifs. Unlike urban knottings such as Joshaghan rugs or Jozan rugs, Qaraja examples look more rustic and less perfected, underlining their authentic village character. The variety of patterns ranges from simple stripe patterns to more complex medallion compositions.

Material and knotting technique

Qaraja rugs are traditionally knotted from high-quality sheep's wool, with both warp and weft also made of wool. The knotting is done with the Ghiordes knot (Turkish knot), which is typical of the region. The knot density usually lies between 100,000 and 200,000 knots per square metre, achieving a good balance between durability and detail.

The wool comes from regional sheep farming and is spun and dyed locally. Through the use of natural dyes the wool rugs develop a beautiful patina over time. The robust construction makes Qaraja rugs long-lasting companions that withstand heavier use well.

Interior styling and care

Owing to their robust properties, Qaraja rugs are particularly well suited to living areas with regular use. The earthy tones blend harmoniously into various interior styles, from rustic to modern. These Persian rugs develop their warm presence particularly well in living and dining rooms. The medium size of most Qaraja rugs makes them ideal room rugs for small to medium-sized spaces.

Care is straightforward: regular vacuuming and occasional rotation are usually sufficient. For heavier soiling we recommend a professional rug cleaning. Thanks to their dense structure, Qaraja rugs are less sensitive to wear than finer urban knottings. Similar to Garawan rugs, they develop a characteristic patina over the years.
